Longlists for The David Gemmell Awards For Fantasy — the Legend, Morningstar, and Ravenheart Awards — have been posted. The awards recognize the best in fantasy fiction and artwork. Open voting to determine the finalists has begun and will continue until midnight on March 31.
Next, voting on the shortlist will open midday on April 21 and close at midnight on June 2. The awards will be presented July 15 at Edge-Lit 6 in Derby, UK.

that’s a long list of fantasy titles! I keep looking for the “only living GRANDMASTER’s” works though … the Dragon-Award winning heir to Frank Herbert/Alfred Bester …

An epically long list for epic fantasy?
I’ve never read anything by Gemell…. anyone have any opinions on his work?
Gemmell’s terrific. His characters have depth (or at least nuance), and he tells a solid, atmospheric tale.
Basically it’s macho heroic fantasy, but it’s smart macho heroic fantasy.
Gemmell was a very good writer. You might look at Legend which is the first book of a series but it works fine as a standalone story or Knights of Dark Renown which is a standalone.
Solid but can feel a bit samey once you’ve read a few.
+1 to Legend if you want to get the flavour of Gemell, although Waylander is my personal favourite.
Always enjoyed Gemmell, there are certainly certain tropes he is very fond of though. But he subverts or plays with many others.
I reread Legend recently, still love it.

I highly recommend Gemmell’s Troy: Lord of the Silver Bow. retelling of the lead-up to the Trojan War (2 more books, the last officially co-written by his wife, but IIRC really she worked on all of them with him, just unofficially???).
