2018 Hugo Awards Nominations Open

Worldcon 76 is now taking nominations for the 2018 Hugo Awards and 1943 Retro-Hugo Awards. Voting will continue until 11:59PM PST on Friday, March 16. Eligible voters will be receiving emails with PINs for online voting in the coming days.

Members of Worldcon 75 in Helsinki, and members of Worldcon 76 in San Jose and Dublin 2019: An Irish Worldcon who joined before January 1, 2018 will be receiving their credentials for the online ballot over the course of the next several days via email, and Worldcon 76 members receiving paper publications will find paper ballots included with Progress Report 2, currently being printed and mailed.

“The list of eligible nominators has nearly 14,000 names on it, so we have to send the emails in waves to avoid having them flagged as spam,” noted Dave McCarty, Hugo Administrator for Worldcon 76. “PINs are being e-mailed out this weekend. We will announce once all PINs have been sent via e-mail and have directions on what you can do if you have not received your PIN.”

The nominations period ends at 11:59PM PST on Friday, March 16. Online nominations will be closed at that point, and paper nominating ballots must be received by the Hugo Administrator by that time.

The Worldcon also announced that Artist GoH John Picacio will host the Hugo Awards ceremony:

The 2018 Hugo Awards will be presented at the 76th World Science Fiction Convention, being held August 16-20, 2018, at McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California. Worldcon 76 has selected Artist Guest of Honor John Picacio to host the 2018 Hugo Awards Ceremony, considered by many attendees the high point of the convention weekend.

Mr. Picacio, a two-time Hugo winner himself, remarks, “It’s a huge honor to be the host of one of science fiction and fantasy’s biggest nights. This is going to be an historical evening and I can’t wait to be there with everyone at Worldcon 76.”
Kevin Roche, Worldcon 76 Conference Chair, noted that “I was thrilled when John accepted my invitation to host the ceremony. It was one of the first actions I was privileged to take as Chair, and I expect him to be a brilliant master of ceremonies.”

Worldcon 76 is also administering the 1943 Retrospective Hugo Awards, an opportunity for recognize works published during the wartime hiatus during which no Worldcon was convened. The Retro Hugos will be announced at a red carpet “1943 Worldcon Party” scheduled as part of First Night at Worldcon 76, on Thursday, August 16, 2018.

  1. Aaackkk, I didn’t keep up with the reading and here’s the midterm.

    (Hi guys!)

Do we or someone else have a spreadsheet thingy of eligibles and Stuff We Liked?

Eeeek! I feel the same way. I’m actually pretty good on short fiction, but in other categories….not so much.

  3. Time to write my “things I really want to get to before March 16” list and weep over it.

Yeah, same. I’m trying to set up some kind of ordinal list, so I at least read the stuff I really want to consider, if not all of it (hahaahahahaha ha).

For a moment I thought this meant March 2016 and the F770 time machine was at it again.

  5. Gah, the annual “who’s the creator/writer/directory and studio for movies everyone’s seen and do I really need to fill it out and do they want ALL that information or just one name/role?!” Oh the joyful tedium of filling out a Hugo ballot. 😉

[ETA: Yes, I know how to use IMDB.]

  6. P.S. I may be an idiot, but it’s not always clear who I should list as “Studio.” There are like 7 production companies listed for Wonder Woman; I guess I’ll list them all, but which one is the “Studio” the Hugo admins want?!

    /OCD 😉

I am right there with you on this one. Its Hugo Metonymy.

Wonder Woman _____ William Moulton Marston / Allan Heinberg – Zack Snyder – Allan Heinberg – Jason Fuchs / Patty Jenkins _____ Warner Bros. – Atlas Entertainment – Cruel & Unusual Films – DC Entertainment – Dune Entertainment – Tencent Pictures – Wanda Pictures / DC

  8. Kendall: it’s not always clear who I should list as “Studio.” There are like 7 production companies listed for Wonder Woman; I guess I’ll list them all, but which one is the “Studio” the Hugo admins want?!

Just in case anyone is actually worried that this is necessary:

Unless there’s a possibility that the name of a work might not fully and unambiguously identify the work, the name of the work should be sufficient:
    Wonder Woman
    The Last Jedi
    etc.

The additional information in the various categories, beyond Title and Author or Nominated Person’s Name, (such as Director, Studio, Publisher, Eligible Works, etc.) is to help ensure that they know who or what you’re nominating, but it’s not mandatory.

If you read the notes from last year’s Hugo Administrator, they made every effort to “fill in the blanks” — one nominator in the Best Editor Long Form category wrote in “whoever edited [novel name]”, and the Hugo Admin found out who it was and added that nomination to their tally.

  9. Speaking of Best Editor Long Form, does anyone know “whoever edited” The Stone Sky? I’d like to save Hugo admin the step. 😉 And see if I can find out what other books they edited last year. Looking at the Orbit editors, I think it was Brit Hvide. N. K. Jemisin thanks her new editor in the acknowledgements, but doesn’t specify.

As JJ said, the other details are simply there to clarify in case of ambiguity. It isn’t a test! For Wonder Woman, I’m pretty sure just the title will get your nomination properly credited. I like to fill in the rest too, but don’t make yourself crazy. I’d put Patty Jenkins and/or Allan Heinberg for the second blank. Then Warner Bros. for the third spot.

  10. And speaking of Wonder Woman, if you’re in the US and have HBO, it’s available to watch there now.

  11. What the others have said. Field like “studio” are there primarily because some people nominate obscure works and it helps the Administrators find the works should it become necessary. Leaving those fields blank doesn’t invalidate your ballot, if that’s what you are thinking.

  12. Thanks for the clarification, folks – I thought I remembered someone saying you don’t need to fill out all the fields on the blockbuster-type works in the Hugo ballot, but I wasn’t sure.
