The winners of the 2020 Colorado Book Awards were announced May 30 in Denver. Awards are presented in 16 categories by Colorado Humanities to celebrate the accomplishments of Colorado’s outstanding authors, editors, illustrators, and photographers.

An Illusion of Thieves is an excellent book: not grimdark, but a realistic portrayal of being on one of the lowest tiers of society — and of the things that can go wrong when Hollywood isn’t writing the script for your caper. I’m waiting eagerly for the second book.

I picked up Illusion of Thieves because I thought I might enjoy it based on the synopsis. I thought it was really good — though the first bit contains a fair bit of tedious, stupid adolescent repeatedly sabotaging the main character, once you get past that, the rest of it is excellent. I’m delighted to see it recognized.
I’ve already read the second book, A Conjuring of Assassins, and it did not disappoint. Each is a mystery set in a vaguely-Italian-Renaissance analogue universe which features magic, with a smart and capable main character who has managed to rise above the poverty into which she was born`.
Yay!
Although this may have been my least favorite of all her books, I’m a huge Carol Berg (Cate Glass) fan. It’s great to see her get some official recognition!
