  1. I think this is the first year in which I have not the slightest idea who any of the fan Hugo winners are…

  2. I read REDSHIRTS and thought of it as an almost funny novelised screenplay. It probably would make a better film than most books, as it seems blocked out for that already.

I thought THE AVENGERS would win for long dramatic form, but from seeing the list of the other nominees, there was no choice.

  3. Taral: I once bought a few books for Hugo reading, asuming they’d be amoungh the nominated from some writer’s past showings, and they all went zip!. I’ll get to opening REAMDE some day.

There were times I didn’t vote because I didn’t even know who the writers were. Better than the nudge of “oh yeah, I met him. Once.”

  4. Mike: The comics winner was Brian VAUGHAN. He did not send a representative to collect his Hugo. Given he is the showrunner for “Under the Dome” this is understandable.

I hope the people who believe that the “Chicks Dig” books are titanic triumphs who cannot be criticized because every fan reveres every essay in both books will explain why the books lost.

  5. @Martin — Thanks for the correction on Vaughan. Wonder why no one corrected LSC3’s front page? Wonder if his name is typoed on the trophy… 🙁

  6. I took a look at her webpage, and Galan Dara seems to be a minor pro artist who does a lot of small press books and semi-pro magazine stuff. Didn’t see any “fanart” though maybe she just doesn’t choose to show the work she does for the love of it and lets the fan press use for free… Or maybe I just missed both pieces.

  7. The best SF film of the year was Cloud Atlas — I’m pretty much willing to get up and call anyone an idiot for not agreeing. (Doubtless that will inspire three dozen fans to immediate disagree, but that would just be for the purpose of challenging too aggressive an opinion.) Similarly, the year before (or the one before that), Cloud Atlas was most likely the best SF novel of the year — certainly good enough for the ballot. Neither incarnation appeared on the Hugo ballot, telling quite a lot about the mediocre taste of science fiction readers.
