Air New Zealand has covered a Boeing 777 with a giant image of the dragon Smaug and scheduled it to fly into Los Angeles in time for the premiere of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
The 177-foot dragon decal is featured on both sides of the plane. It was produced by Weta Digital, which created special effects for the movie.
In a stunning display of government miscommunication as well as a lack of reading/spelling skills that resulted in an international incident, the Air New Zealand jet was turned away by the California Air Resources Board.
