Marc Scott Zicree’s Space Command: Redemption, beneficiary of a Kickstarter campaign that blew away its $75,000 goal and ended up raising $221,267, started shooting March 17.
The new science fiction franchise follows the United Planet’s Space Command, “a dedicated group of scientists, soldiers and adventurers exploring and taming the vast expanse of our solar system for human colonization.”
The stunning digital effects are presided over by Doug Drexler, the Oscar and Emmy award winner, whose credits include Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, four Star Trek feature films, Battlestar Galactica, and currently Defiance.
Cast members include Doug Jones, Bill Mumy, Ethan Phillips, Mira Furlan, Armin Shimerman, Dean Haglund, Elle Viane Sonnet, Bryan McClure, Christina Marie Moses, Katharine Lee McEwan, Jelena Mrdja, Ethan McDowell, Coley Speaks, Aaron Gaffey, and Sara Maraffino.
Bill Mumy recently told an interviewer from StarTrek.com how much he’s enjoying being part of Space Command‘s ensemble —
Let’s start with the present. What’s life like for you these days?
MUMY: Life is good. I’m busy working in multiple arenas. Right now I’m back wearing the “Actor in Space” hat. I’m co-starring in Space Command: Redemption, Marc Zicree’s ambitious multi-generational sci-fi epic. I’m working with Mira Furlan from Babylon 5, so that’s a treat for me. Also working with Bob Picardo from Trek. He’s great and funny and we get along really well. Doug Jones from Falling Skies is also in the cast and he’s very talented and nice. It’s a good group, cast and crew and it’s fun to be working in an arena I enjoy and am well known for. I play a “Steve Jobs” type of character, a billionaire inventor who creates synthetic workers. Bob and I and Mira and Doug just shot a 9-page master together the other day. That’s a rare event. So far, so good.

Well, perhaps it’s time to bring them back, then!
Taral puts me in mind of my favorite quote from folksinger John Prine:
“I’m gonna keep on writing songs
until I write the song
that makes the guys in Detroit
who draw the cars
put tailfins on ’em again.”
(Thought the astronautics expert in me is compelled to agree with Taral, any SF writer who desires a story incorporating tailfins is capable of whipping out six rationalizations before breakfast.)
Mumy should feel at home, since as a child he grew up working with Alfred Hitchcock and Rod Serling. Happily, he seems normal.
