ERB Put Tarzan on the Map

Here in the Los Angeles area, where the Cahuenga and Topanga passes still have their Native American names, it’s easy to forget that the name of nearby Tarzana is not another such example. It was Edgar Rice Burroughs – author of the Tarzan books – who originally owned and developed the area, once part of his Tarzana Ranch.

The name has been in the news again because Danton Burroughs, grandson of Edgar Rice Burroughs, passed away on May 1. He is said to be the last family member to have an active interest in Burroughs’ legacy, and he was chairman of the board of the corporation that handled rights to the ERB properties. His memorial is scheduled for May 17 at 2 p.m. in the Tarzana Cultural Center.
