Horrifying Bradbury References in Archie Comics

ALWArchie_8var heres Juddy COMPArchie comic spinoff Afterlife with Archie, clicking along since 2013, has been pursuing a story arc in which Jughead’s dog Hot Dog is transformed into a zombie, bites a few people, and Riverdale rapidly begins to fill with the living dead.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa writes Afterlife and a companion series, the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (the teenaged witch). He noted in a a recent interview that the latest issues of each contain literary allusions from Edgar Allan Poe, Henry James, Ray Bradbury and Truman Capote.

The Bradbury references immediately put the comics on John King Tarpinian’s buy list. He clued me into the story and sent a photo of the relevant frame in Sabrina to go with the available online art from Archie.

Tarpinian is delighted with Archie’s alternate cover where a dead Jughead is peeking thru a broken door and the caption reads “Here’s Juggy!!!”

  1. Typo alert: “Here”, in the caption to the final image, should be “Her”.

  2. First “Fuck Me Ray Bradburry” then this. I swear sometimes you’all don’t know what motivates us.

  3. @GK Chesterton: Thank you for the Rabid Puppy perspective.

  4. I swear sometimes you’all don’t know what motivates us.

The complete lack of a sense of humor?

  5. GK – I swear sometimes you’all don’t know what motivates us

    An aversion to literary references?

  6. I swear sometimes you’all don’t know what motivates us.

No empathy for any aesthetic but your own?

  7. I swear sometimes you’all don’t know what motivates us.

Frustration at also being unable to choose between Betty and Veronica?

  8. Didn’t get cast in the Minions movie and had to find opportunities to serve elsewhere?

  9. @ Fake G. K. Chesterton:

I swear sometimes you’all don’t know what motivates us.

Given that this response was somewhat unexpected — fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, and an almost fanatical devotion to Vox Day, and nice red uniforms?

Really, what exactly is it that you hate — Archie, or references to Ray Bradbury? And why?

  10. @AnnoyingPseud: “First “Fuck Me Ray Bradburry” then this. I swear sometimes you’all don’t know what motivates us.”

The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy?

Or might be having fun in a way you don’t approve of? Or might be expressing their enthusiasm for something in a way you don’t approve of?

  11. So much endless snark. And really, what else is this Archie but that? You talk about “new” but zombie has been done to death. There is no creativity here, it is just ripping down what has been made before you.

So yes, you still don’t get it. And your comments do nothing but make that clear.

  12. GK – You talk about “new” but zombie has been done to death.

Well every time we think it’s dead it somehow rises back up again.

Your comment serve only to obfuscate though, so please clarify, is the anger because Archie included a Bradbury reference? Maybe how Jughead is painted in a negative light on that cover? Surely you can illuminate us as to what drives your passionate response to Archie.

  13. My guess: GK thinks that the authors and/or publishers of Archie are in some secret cabal with the woman who wrote and performed the “Fuck Me” song, and that for some reason the members of this imagined cabal not only care what “motivates” the Puppies, but also that they read comments on file770.com, hence his addressing them here as “you’all”.
Alternatively, “you’all” is being used as a singular pronoun referring to Mike Glyer, and GK thinks that Mike should know that nobody who reads file770.com is interested in any news related to Ray Bradbury.

So much endless snark. And really, what else is this Archie but that? You talk about “new” but zombie has been done to death.

If that’s what you meant, that’s what you should have said. So you don’t like zombies? Big whoop. I’m not a big fan of zombies myself, but I don’t try and claim that any group of people that I’m part of must necessarily not like them either.

I guess the “us” in your first comment refers to you and the resentful, zombie-hating mouse in your pocket.

So yes, you still don’t get it.

I don’t get why you’re incapable of expressing yourself clearly. I don’t get why you can’t limit your claims to be specifically about your own preferences.

  15. @AnnoyingPseud — “So much endless snark”

Well, when you give us such a juicy target, between your vagueness and condescension, what do you expect?

“There is no creativity here, it is just ripping down what has been made before you.”

You mean Archie? Because certainly neither the references to Bradbury nor the video you reference was “ripping down” Bradbury.

“So yes, you still don’t get it.”

Well, considering you do nothing to explain it, and the entirety of the Puppy enterprise has been a welter of differing alleged motivations, this is not surprising, now is it?

Had you been here to communicate, rather than to sneer, you might have accomplished something.

Just wanted to put this up and say: Niiiiiiiice.

  17. Several different responses:

Re: Archie and Re: Bradbury: Cute and fun homages. Zombies aren’t really my thing, but I love seeing creators have fun with their works. A playful willingness to toss jokes back and forth is a sign of a healthy creative community.

Re: Fake G.K. Chesterton. Boy, I guess GKC can find something to be a sour arse about about *anything*, no matter how light or harmless. Is it official Rabid Puppy policy to troll, well, anybody about anything?
