Stephen King and other winners were presented the National Medal of Arts at a White House awards ceremony today. The citation read by President Obama, reports NPR, called King —
“One of the most popular and prolific writers of our time, Mr. King combines his remarkable storytelling with his sharp analysis of human nature. For decades, his works of horror, suspense, science fiction, and fantasy have terrified and delighted audiences around the world.”

I see that Chicago is bidding for the 2022 Worldcon. Perhaps they would consider inviting Mr. Obama as Fan Guest of Honor?

@Seth Gordon He gets secret service protection till 2027 so I think a worldcon crowd would make his detail apoplectic.
ETA: And he’ll probably retire to Hawaii, Chicago’s weather isn’t the city’s main selling point.

I can’t help it, folks. I still miss his beard. Although he has written that his early attempts to write SF were really horror (and didn’t sell), I still admire THE TOMMYKNOCKERS. Stephen Jay Gould’s tip of the hat to that book and King in WONDERFUL LIFE concerning “dumb evolution” make him one of us, even if no SF editor bought one of his early story attempts. So, Mr. King, please try a SF story again sometime, PLEASE!
