2017 Academy Awards Nominees

Arrival, the movie adaptation of Ted Chiang’s “Stories of Your Life,” and Hidden Figures, the dramatization of African-American women who worked on the early space program, are among the nominees for Best Motion Picture in the 2017 Academy Awards nominees list.

Arrival’s director, and Hidden Figures supporting actress Octavia Spencer also received nominations. Other films of interest to Hugo voters nominated in technical and animation categories are shown below. For a complete list of categories, click the link to CNN.

  1. Can someone explain to me how the hell Dev Patel is considered a “Supporting Actor” for his lead role in Lion? Is this a “John-Boyega-nominated-for-Supporting-Actor-in-The-Force-Awakens” sort of thing? 😡

  2. JJ: Studios are playing politics. It is very common for a studio to promote an actor in a category they think that actor might have a chance of winning. The studio probably thought the Leading Actor field was too strong this year so they are trying for Supporting Actor. People in the industry that vote know this.

  3. Well I’d quite like to know how Hugh Grant didn’t get nominated at all (for Florence Foster Jenkins.) I can only imagine that his votes got split between Lead and Supporting Actor and he missed on both. (I also wonder if anyone has ever succeeded in making the shortlist for both for the same role? What happens then?)

    The Worldcon Committee shall determine the eligibility of nominees and assignment to the proper category of works nominated in more than one category.

  5. What does the Worldcon Committee have to do with the Oscars? Members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences make the category determination for the Oscars, by their votes:

    3. . . . The determination as to whether a role is a leading or supporting role shall be made individually by members of the branch at the time of balloting.
    4. The leading role and supporting role categories will be tabulated simultaneously. If any performance should receive votes in both categories, the achievement shall be placed only on the ballot in that category in which, during the tabulation process, it first receives the required number of votes to be nominated. In the event that the performance receives the numbers of votes required to be nominated in both categories simultaneously, the achievement shall be placed only on the ballot in that category in which it receives the greater percentage of the total votes.
    5. In the event that two achievements by an actor or actress receive sufficient votes to be nominated in the same category, only one shall be nominated using the preferential tabulation process and such other allied procedures as may be necessary to achieve that result.
    6. In the event that an actor or actress receives a sufficient number of votes to be nominated for one achievement in one category and for another achievement in the other category, both achievements shall be eligible.
