Brooke Bolander Tops 2016 Uncanny Magazine Reader Poll

Uncanny Magazine has released the results of its 2016 Favorite Fiction Reader Poll.

I had to rush the news to the public because their announcement has the magic number of five items —

  1. Our Talons Can Crush Galaxies” by Brooke Bolander
  2. You’ll Surely Drown Here If You Stay” by Alyssa Wong
  3. The Witch of Orion Waste and the Boy Knight” by E. Lily Yu
  4. The Green Knight’s Wife” by Kat Howard
  5. The Sound of Salt and Sea” by Kat Howard

  1. Thanks for these. I enjoyed them all, but particularly The Green Knight’s Wife and Our Talons … . I haven’t read too many stories about harpies, apart from Philip Pullman’s.

  2. “Our Talons” is a terrible story with a laudable message. It’s almost a caricature of what the puppies claim all SF has degenerated to. A noble message does not (or at least should not) excuse a bad story.

I gave it one star because it has a Mary-Sue protagonist. I’m just surprised that so many people enjoyed watching Mary Sue totally destroy a really bad guy.

From the five finalists, I gave good reviews to You’ll Surely Drown Here If You Stay, by Alyssa Wong, and to The Sound of Salt and Sea, by Kat Howard. The other two were okay stories, just not great in my view. None of them has a really strong message–not one that overwhelms the story, anyway.
