One Stfnal Figure to Attend Royal Wedding

We can all breathe a sigh of relief — though I feared the sf community would go unrepresented at the royal wedding, when the invitation list came out I learned that actor Rowan Atkinson, Edmund Blackadder himself, will be there. He’s said to be a close friend of the Prince of Wales.

And while Somtow never answered my question whether any Thai royalty would be going, it turns out that Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand is attending.

So I’ve been working out my degrees of separation from this event. If Somtow knows the Princess, I’m only two away. If not, I’m probably three away — I know an Episcopal priest who has met the USA’s Presiding Bishop, who in turn (I hope) has met the Archbishop of Canterbury.

  1. @Dave: It may well be our secret. But we fans are famous for appropriating at need anything that strikes our fancy. For example, I’m not sure all of the media-oriented Worldcon GoHs knew they were part of the community before they were invited.

  2. Mr. Atkinson portrayed The Doctor in the Comic Relief special The Curse of Fatal Death by Richard Curtis. If that’s not enough, for the spy fans (U.N.C.L.E./THRUSH, James Bond, etc.), he was with Sean Connery in Never Say Never Again, the Kevin McClory remake of Thunderball.

Blackadder has also time-travelled, with the result at the end of him being King of England and Tony Robinson, Baldrick, as his Prime Minister.

  3. But I tried to respond to your blog, only to discover that the blog was closed to responses … so that was not fair. I do in fact know HRH Princess Sirindhorn slightly. Indeed, we share the same great-great-great-grandparents. Along with a LOT of other people, royal and non-royal. She is a lovely person and one of the most popular royals in Thailand.

  4. @Somtow: Thanks for trying again, I appreciate your comment. Sorry that you found it blocked. But now I know — my degree of separation was only two!

By coincidence I was thinking about the comment “window” yesterday and reset it from 14 to 30 days. My preference would be to leave the comments open perpetually, however, before I set the window I was getting 100-300 spam comments a day which have to be screened to identify and validate the genuine ones. With the window set at 14 days I was still getting 50-60. I will see whether there’s a change in level of spam with a longer comment window. Not sure these things are really related anyway. We’ll see.

  5. Also, Elton John was prominently seen at the wedding, and he co-wrote “Rocket Man,” which is SF (not to mention his involvement in fantasy like The Lion King and Gnomeo & Juliet).
