Berlin Sci-Fi Filmfest This Weekend

The first German film festival dedicated exclusively to the newest science fiction movies, short and long, from all around the world happens this weekend in Berlin says publicist Reggie Grünenberg. The Berlin Sci-Fi Filmfest.

The Race of the Time Machines

Soon, there will be another lively crowd at the popular festival cinema Babylon which by itself is a gem of movie history. On November 17th and 18th, 2017 (Fri. + Sat.), the first Berlin Sci-fi Filmfest will take place there. It is also the first film festival in Germany that is dedicated exclusively to science fiction movies. Thereby, this genre returns to its very birthplace, for it was at the studios of Berlin-Babelsberg that Fritz Lang’s Metropolis was shot in 1926, the first science fiction film in feature movie length and by far the most expensive movie in his days.

The team of festival director Alexander Pfander, all experienced filmmakers, has chosen 66 movies for the festival. They will be screened in two movie theaters from 10.30 a.m. to 8 p.m. The quality of the submissions that came from all around the world – the festival language is English, of course – has surprised Pfander’s team: “We are amazed by the technical and visual craft and by the powerful storytelling of the submitted movies. One ought not to forget that most of them were made on shoestring budgets.”

The first panel on Friday at 14.30 a.m. discusses Augmented Reality, AI and the Singularity – Will the Future be a Sci-Fi Nightmare? The second panel on Saturday 11.30 a.m. is about The Art of Making a Low/Micro Budget Sci-Fi Movie. Prizes will be awarded in thirteen categories.
