Robert J. Sawyer Wins 2017 Heinlein Award

Canadian hard sf writer Robert J. Sawyer has won the 2017 Robert A. Heinlein Award, given annually to an author of outstanding published works in science fiction and technical writings that inspire the human exploration of space.

Sawyer’s most-recent book is Quantum Night, from Ace, his 23rd novel. Sawyer was an initial inductee into the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.

The Robert A. Heinlein Award is managed and sponsored by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society. The award selection committee is chaired by Michael F. Flynn and is composed of science fiction writers..

The Robert A. Heinlein Award is a sterling silver medallion bearing Heinlein’s image as depicted by artist Arlin Robbins. A grant from the Heinlein Society funds half the costs associated with the award.

2016 Robert A. Heinlein Award Goes To Kim Stanley Robinson

Kim Stanley Robinson has won the 2016 Robert A. Heinlein Award. Sponsored by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society, the award is given to an author of outstanding published works in science fiction and technical writings that inspire the human exploration of space. Robinson has been selected as this year’s winner in recognition of his body of work, including 19 novels (such as his Mars trilogy), and over 40 short stories.

The award will be presented during Balticon 50 opening ceremonies on May 27.

The winner also receives two lapel pins for use when a large medallion is impractical, and a plaque describing the award.  The award selection committee is chaired by Michael F. Flynn and is composed of science fiction writers.

Jack McDevitt Wins 2015 Robert A. Heinlein Award

heinlein medalJack McDevitt of Georgia has won the 2015 Robert A. Heinlein Award. Sponsored by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society, the award is given to an author of outstanding published works in science fiction and technical writings that inspire the human exploration of space. McDevitt has been selected as this year’s winner in recognition of his body of work, which includes over 21 novels and 81 short stories.

The award will be presented during Balticon 49’s opening ceremonies on Friday, May 22.

Landis To Receive 2014 Heinlein Award

Geoffrey A. Landis, science fiction author and NASA scientist, is the 2014 winner of the Robert A. Heinlein Award. The award is given for outstanding published works in science fiction and technical writings that inspire the human exploration of space. It will be presented May 23 at opening ceremonies of Balticon 48.

heinlein medalThe Heinlein Award selection committee consists of science fiction writers and was founded by Dr. Yoji Kondo, a long-time friend of Robert and Virginia Heinlein. The current Chairman of the Committee is Michael F. Flynn.

The award recognizes Landis’ body of work — 5 books, 83 short stories and 76 poems in the SF field, and over 353 science fact publications.

The Heinlein Award is a sterling silver medallion bearing the image of Robert A. Heinlein, as depicted by artist Arlin Robins.

Virginia Heinlein authorized multiple awards in memory of her husband, including the Heinlein Prize, which is fully funded by Virginia Heinlein’s estate, and a National Space Society award for volunteer projects.

Crook and Heinlein Awards Given at Balticon

The Compton Crook Award and Robert A. Heinlein Award were awarded during opening ceremonies at Balticon 46, the Maryland Regional Science Fiction Convention, on May 25.

The Compton Crook Award winner was T. C. McCarthy for his novel Germline.

The Robert A. Heinlein Award went to Stanley Schmidt, author and editor of Analog.
