A Day of Thanks 9/2

I was overwhelmingly touched to receive the new laptop you Filers chipped in to get me. And impressed with the behind-the-scenes coordination between JJ, Diana, and John King Tarpinian to have it delivered and brought to me here in the hospital. It’s an amazing gift. I am so happy to get it.

Yesterday, John showed me how to use the new laptop. To acclimate myself I started on some background tasks — there were about 6000 comments in  the queue, and nearly all — but not all — are spam. I got that down to 4800 and freed a few real comments. More of your trapped-in-amber remarks will be released as I continue.

I am able to do a bit more each day, and I feel that typing words again is speeding my recovery, some combination of verbal thought together with physical action, which multiplies the benefits of the generous community here. I’m grateful to have your help and support.

  1. So exciting to see a post from OGH that has enough text for paragraphs!

I’ve heard (and I fully believe) that it takes a week of recovery at home for every day spent in the hospital. That means it will be a very long time indeed until Mike is fully up to snuff. Don’t rush it! Do what you need to do! (That includes paying no attention to the commands or demands of people like me, of course.)

  2. That means it will be a very long time indeed until Mike is fully up to snuff.

Far be it from me to dictate the personal vices of others, but I think Mike would be better off laying off on the snuff entirely.

  3. Petrea: I will return home on Tuesday. Looking forward to it. The hospital bed is not for me.

  4. real tech is a lovely thing
so glad that the Helpful Tool arrived in time to actually, you know, be helpful

  5. Missed you so much, and wish you every good thing, including unlimited supply of spoons. So good to hear from you!

  6. Good to see you back!

We might have a well-trained Sh… sh… shredder to assist with spam elimination?

  7. Mike, glad to hear you’re doing better.

Ancillary Stuffed Possum Helium Dirigible Vs Cyber-Sluggoth!

Also, I’ve been wondering: what if Asimov and Clarke had collaborated on a mash-up of NIGHTFALL and THE NINE BILLION NAMES OF GOD ?

  8. More thanks to hand out on this auspicious day. Late as usual, many thanks to Bartimaeus (so?) for the link to the Jemisin article, Aaron for his Worldcon report and JJ for the tip about Cecelia and Kate, which i’ve added to my Kindle library. Thanks to all!

  9. Also, I’ve been wondering: what if Asimov and Clarke had collaborated on a mash-up of NIGHTFALL and THE NINE BILLION NAMES OF GOD ?

I have a hard time envisioning that. I’d prefer a collaboration between Clarke and Elizabeth Gilbert (author of Eat Pray Love.) The story of a gourmet god with a goal to sample all possible recipes before shutting his whole “universe” experiment down. Title? The Nine Billion Noms of God.

  10. Mike, so glad you’re getting close to going home. We missed you at the Business Meeting, elswe here at Worldcon, and here. It is nice to see the commentariat continuing regardless, though – you get credit for that, too.

  11. Hurrah! I see the escape committee is still doing its job.

Very best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery, we’re missing you greatly.

  12. The Hugo shenanigans may be affecting society in general: are any of them surnamed Ward?

I was just doing some searches on the US Army WWII serial number database, so I thought I’d check. Yep, 4 Noah Wards.

  13. Tuesday! Congrats! You’re probably getting really tired of appertaining yourself some IV drip. Glad the laptop is making you happy. Typing is excellent therapy indeed.

  14. Somebody may have posted this already

I saw it on Tor.com, and I still say the last picture’s a Dragonball crossover.

  15. Woo-hoo! Not much to add here except that I’m glad you’re feeling better and happy you’re enjoying your new toy/tool.

  16. I’m sure you can’t wait to go home, Mike. So happy to hear you are on the mend. We’ve missed you!

  17. This is about as wildly off topic as one can get, but …I am dead of the cute, but I’m biased…

(the one in the fortune cookie shirt is my youngest. in the interest of slightly more explanation, the space behind the Ugly chair is a sort of hidden alcove at the side of our living room, and according to the witness – my husband – who sent me the video, they snuck back there expressly for the purpose.)

  18. Good to “see” you recovering, however slowly, and may your homecoming Tuesday be happy but peaceful. And no marathons until January.

    Best wishes!

  19. Welcome back to posting, Mike! We missed you–and we’ll be here when you are ready to resume full activity!

  20. Glad you’ll be back soon, Mike! The place hasn’t been the same without you. (Hisses at shoggoth.)

  21. Hurray that you’re getting better! Hurray again that you are enjoying the new tech!

Psst, shoggoth–over here. Into the tub, that’s a good, uh, thing. No, you can’t read Perry Rodan in the tub; you’ll get the books wet—oh, don’t cry. I can’t stand it when a shoggoth cries. Here, we’ll double-ziplock my kindle and you can read on that, okay? There you go…

    Everything’s fine here, Mike–just fine!

  22. @Lenora Rose, I’m not sure “off topic” is a thing that can exist here. Or if it does, it’s in one of the alternate dimensions (what alternate dimensions? There are no alternate dimensions in the basement. What basement? Well, there were some upgrades…yeah, just a very few, small, tiny upgrades.), so let’s not pay attention. It’s not your bias. That’s adorable. 😉

  23. Welcome Back Mike, good to hear the clicking of your typing fingers again. Rest up and recover well, and enjoy the new shiny, may it give you much pleasure.

  24. Glad to hear you’re getting better. I hope you’re out of the hospital sooner if not soonest.

  25. Mike, so fantastic that you are starting to feel a bit like yourself again. We’ll all be very happy when you’re no longer stuck in the hospital.

I do hope the staff was good. A good set of nurses, PAs and techs makes all the difference in the world.

  26. I’m also really enjoying the e-mail notifications of weeks-old posts of delurkers — as well as those of our trolls — as they are released from the Sin Bin.
