  1. The book was my favorite novel last year, but I cant imagine a book less suited for a movie adaptation.

  2. Interesting trailer–rather than telling you everything about the movie, this one tells you almost nothing whatsoever.

Is it just me, or does Natalie Portman look unusually thin in the face in the trailer?

  3. I like this a lot.

It’s one of those books where atmosphere is integral to everything rather than being decorative, and this trailer makes it look like they’ve got a good sense of the atmosphere. Area X looks suitably lush, bizarre and beautiful in a way that doesn’t really remind me of any SF movie art I’ve seen.

Contra Darren, I think the trailer tells quite a bit. I mean, I can’t totally put myself in the shoes of someone who hasn’t read the book, but the opening effectively and wordlessly conveys the basic idea of an expedition into some kind of guarded territory on Earth where alien weirdness has happened; the authorities previously sent Natalie Portman’s husband in there, it didn’t go well, now she’s going in. That’s not only the basic premise of the book, it’s at least 50% of the plot— the other things that happen are either internal, abstract, or hard to summarize.
