Architect’s Daydreams

China TV building

The new China Central Television headquarters building in Beijing may have been inspired by a clothespin, going by one reporter’s description of it as consisting “of two angled towers connected at the top to form a continuous loop of horizontal and vertical sections.”

But the moment I saw it, my memory flashed back about 10 years ago to the publicity campaign for (I believe) Deep Impact. Somebody figured out how to decorate a tall office building in West Los Angeles with a jagged sky-blue patch and make it look as if it had been holed by a meteorite. So today I thought, aha! Here’s an architect who’s made sure that any space debris aiming for the same spot on his new building will miss!
