Blake Edwards (1922-2010)

Blake Edwards: screenwriter, director, died Wednesday aged 88. Early screenplays include the sf comedy The Atomic Kid (1954). He also directed and co-wrote the supernatural tv movie Justin Case (1988). Best known, of course, for the Pink Panther franchise.

Early in his career, Edwards was an actor, and appeared in STRANGLER OF THE SWAMP, the title of which can be sung to the tune of “Strangers in the Night.” One of the Pink Panther movies concludes with Dreyfus (Herbert Lom), now insane, laughing as he destroys himself with a death ray. Edwards’ SWITCH is a fantasy about reincarnation.

Blake Edwards was tremendously talented and creative and a lot of fun; he also married Julie Andrews and then immortalized her like a bare-breasted Valkyrie in S.O.B. which he quickly turned around by immortalizing her as a woman pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman in the always delightful VICTOR-VICTORIA. God bless him and comfort Julie–
