Claremont, Simonson at NYRSF Reading on 9/13

Chris Claremont and Louise Simonson, two of the great names in comics, are coming to the New York Review of SF Reading on September 13.

Chris Claremont enjoyed a 17-year run on Marvel Comics’ The Uncanny X-Men. By conservative estimate, he has sold in excess of 500,000,000 comics worldwide. His first published short story in over 25 years, “The Ghost of the Superstition Mountains” will appear in the anthology Under the Moons of Mars: New Adventures on Barsoom edited by John Joseph Adams, coming from Random House in February 2012.

Louise Simonson is best known for her work on comic book titles such as Power Pack, X-Factor, New Mutants, Superman: The Man of Steel, and Steel. She has been a prominent writer and editor in the comics industry since the 1970s.      (address and links below)Autumn is approaching and our September event the start of our new season.  As happens in the comics industry, things often get different timelines, and so has it been with us.  We’ve enjoyed two 20th Anniversaries, but now we are inaugurating our 21st Anniversary.

And how!  Guest curator Amy Goldschlager has brought us two uncanny giants of the comics industry, both of whom are appearing at the NYRSF Reading series as prose pros.

Chris Claremont has encountered more success than most writers ever dream of.  His initial unbroken 17-year run on Marvel Comics’ The Uncanny X-Men is the stuff of industry legend.  By conservative estimate, Chris has sold in excess of 500,000,000 comics worldwide.  He has written other seminal characters such as Batman and Superman, originated several creator-owned series, is published throughout the world in many different languages, and has authored nine novels.  His papers are in the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Columbia University.

Chris’ prose novels include the science fiction High Frontier Series (First Flight, Grounded!, Sundowner); the fantasy series Shadow Moon, Shadow Dawn, Shadow Star and the dark fantasy Dragon Moon.  He has just completed work on a dark fantasy prose novel, Wild Blood, and is beginning work on a thriller, Silk Road, with Robert Gregory Browne.  His first published short story in over 25 years, “The Ghost of the Superstition Mountains” will appear in the anthology Under the Moons of Mars: New Adventures on Barsoom edited by John Joseph Adams, coming from Random House in February 2012.

Louise Simonson is a powerhouse in the comics industry.  She is best known for her work on comic book titles such as Power Pack, X-Factor, New Mutants, Superman: The Man of Steel, and Steel.  She has been a prominent writer and editor in the comics industry since the 1970s,  From 1993 through 2009, she wrote seven picture books and twelve novels for middle-readers and adults, many of which featured characters from DC Comics.  “Weezie” will read from her work in progress, a contemporary urban dark fantasy, Night Terrors.

Amy Goldschlager was the fourth curator of the NYRSF Readings.  She is a print and online editor who has edited science fiction, children’s, and craft books for several major publishers. She has also written reviews for Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, Locus, Audiofile magazine, and ComicMix.

The New York Review of Science Fiction Reading Series provides performances from some of the best writers in science fiction, fantasy, speculative fiction, etc. The series usually takes place the first Tuesday of every month, but maintains flexibility in time and place, so be sure to stay in touch through the mailing list and the Web.

After the event, please join us as we treat our readers for dinner and drinks nearby.
