    Barbarella (1968)

  10. 1. Labyrinth (1986)
    2. Army of Darkness (1992). Die Hard grossed over $140 million in its first run on a budget of $28 million. It is not a cult movie.
    3. Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979). Yellow Submarine was a box-office hit that received widespread critical acclaim. It is not a cult movie. Life of Brian isn’t the cultiest thing either, but it’s way more cult than Yellow Submarine.
    4. The Little Shop of Horrors (1960)
    5. Tie. And I’m not sure either of these are cult movies; they both seemed to do pretty well at the box office.
    6. Tie. As did both of these. I’m really questioning what is being regarded as cult here.
    7. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975).
    8. Better Off Dead (1985). Better Off Dead is only kind of cult, but Kung Fu Hustle was the highest grossing film in Hong Kong history from its release in 2004 until 2011, how is that cult?
    9. Abstain
    10. This is Spinal Tap (1984). I would have made this a tie, but Academy Award nominee Forbidden Planet doesn’t seem very culty to me.
    11. Godzilla (1954). Young Frankenstein was critical favorite and box office smash.
    12. Abstain.
    13. Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959). Dr. Strangelove was nominated for four Academy Awards; it is not cult.
    14. Tie.

  38. People are really falling down on the clever comments (bless you, Kyra, Jim). But I was very pleased to see meh used by others. OK, by other.

A lot of the films in the initial post didn’t look anything like cult films to me. Now that we’re winding down, that’s starting to affect my choices.

    1. HIDING UNDERNEATH: Tremors, by a worm-nose.

    2. FEATURING GEORGE HARRISON: Army of Darkness, because there’s no way in hell Die Hard qualifies as cult.

    3. BRITISH HUMOUR: Monty Python’s Life of Brian. It’s Monty Python. Therefore it’s cult. A really, really big cult, but cult.

    4. BIG VS LITTLE: The Little Shop of Horrors (1960). Heck, I’d have chosen the remake over Lebowski, a film that never worked for me.

    5. LEADER BY BOMB OR POND: The Mouse That Roared, in no small part because we have a better Monty Python flick on the list.

    6. THE HAPPIEST DAYS OF OUR LIVES: Groundhog Day. Again.

    7. ALIENS GOING HOME: The Rocky Horror Picture Show. For many years, the very definition of cult film.

    8. BUCK UP LITTLE CAMPER: . . . (say it) . . . meh

    9. WHO BUILT THIS STINKING ROAD? Eisenhower did. Death Race 2000

    10. DISTINCT TYPES OF VISIONARIES: Again, I’m falling back on what is a cult and what isn’t, ergo This is Spinal Tap. Nota bene: should have been question 11.

    11. CREATURE MOVIES: Young Frankenstein, the best horse opera ever.

    12. ON A MISSION: The Blues Brothers, because it’s far-outlasted Escape From New York.

    13. TAKEN ON A STRANGE JOURNEY: Dr. Strangelove. After the Republican convention, this looks more compelling than ever.

    14. USED AS PUPPETS: Time Bandits. No, I don’t count it as a Monty Python film. But Malkovich just has too much mainstream appeal.

    15. BATTLE OF THE DRAG QUEENS: Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. I will forever remember that moment in Fellowship of the Ring when Hugo Weaving in full Elvish regalia steps up to open the Council of Elrond, and all I could hear was Donna Summer singing “I Will Survive.”

    16. A MATCH FOR YOUR BRAIN: Oh god, I can’t choose. Princess Bride is beginning to infect it’s third generation of fans, but it’s really a mainstream movie. Shaun of the Dead is more about poking fun at cult movies than it is a cult movie. Oh God, I don’t know. Meh, but an agonized meh.

    17. WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN TO NAME THIS TITLE!?: #1 Blazing Saddles can suck my forearm any day. #2 Serenity, #3 Barbarella.

  39. For my part, I’m not really voting for what’s “more cult”, just for what I liked better.

    2. Army of Darkness (1992)
    Bunches and bunches of times.

  46. 1. Labyrinth (1986)
While I’m fond of both choices, this seems like an easy pick.

    2. Army of Darkness (1992)
Going with the more definitely cultish one here. 🙂

    3. Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979)
Even if I thought the Beatle’s blockbuster were in any respect a cultish movie (and I don’t), I think I’d still pick the Python.

    4. The Big Lebowski (1998)
    Oh, very tough call.

    5. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
    Ouch, this was painful!

    6. Groundhog Day (1993)
Both pretty borderline as far as cultishness goes…

    7. Repo Man (1984)
The other is more cultish, but this is definitely cultish enough, and one of my very favorites.

    8. Kung Fu Hustle (2004)
Ouch. Apples and oranges comparison, and I’m a big fan of both. I guess I’ll pick this one?

    9. Death Race 2000 (1975)
I just really like this one, ok? 🙂

    10. This is Spinal Tap (1984)
Ow, seriously hurts to choose here!

    11. Young Frankenstein (1974)

    12. Escape from New York (1981)
Very very tough call! I decided to go with the more culty one here.

    13. Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

    14. Being John Malkovich (1999)

    15. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)
Much better movie, and only slightly less culty.

    16. I can’t even! Tie.

    17. WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN TO NAME THIS TITLE!?
    1. Blazing Saddles (1974)
