Dublin The Long Way

Daniel Dern says he took these photos “on the road to Dublin.” Who knew that road stretches as far as Wales?

  • Why one might need local coinage
  • Black garlic ketchup
  • Slates we can agree on 🙂
  • Steam train in Wales
  • Yup, the longest town name in the world

  1. I’m totally on board with black garlic ketchup — but I really really want to know what that town’s name means. It must mean something!

  2. @Contrarius, from what appears to be the town’s official website:(they also say it’s the longest URL on the web):

LlanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogOGOgoch. Saint Mary’s Church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio of the red cave.

  3. I’ve been watching a charming YouTube series by a couple passing through every mainline train station in Great Britain. They had some fun at the notable Welsh location.

This was in 2017, they have more recently done a similar exercise in Ireland (as well as other projects). Also a nice example of a fandom!

  4. @Cassy —

Heavens. They really wanted to know where they were, didn’t they?

  5. Back in the days before the customs union, it was commonplace for people to jump on the ferry from Dun Laoighaire to Holyhead and buy obscene amounts of alcohol and cigarettes duty free – with a few people and sufficient buy-in from friends it would work out far cheaper than buying it in the shops here.

One time two friends of mine did the run, and on arriving in Holyhead one of them stepped off the ferry and said “Ah, England”. My other friend was largely happy that no Welsh people were in earshot, or they chose not to react.
