Goodreads Deletes Vox Day, Rabid Puppies

Vox Day reports on Vox Popoli that Goodreads deleted his account and also the Rabid Puppies Group just 36 hours after he set them up.

He received this message from Goodreads:

Hello Vox,

Your account was recently brought to our attention. Upon review, we have decided to remove it from the site. A CSV of the books you shelved is attached for your personal records. You are banned from using Goodreads in any capacity going forward.

Sincerely,
The Goodreads Team

I checked Goodreads, and both accounts are gone. (There remains an older Vox Day account, where all the entries were made in 2009.)

  1. I think the philosophically interesting question that has arisen is whether there comes a point when the level of trolling skill displayed is so weak that the trolling is no longer actually trolling.

  2. @Mr Mister

As I told you before, Aaron and JJ are valued members of this community.

I’d appreciate it if you’d stop hurling around baseless accusations.

  3. Was there ever candy in this troll? I don’t think he’s going to pass the rigorous tests required to qualify as an Official File770 Troll.

  4. I think the philosophically interesting question that has arisen is whether there comes a point when the level of trolling skill displayed is so weak that the trolling is no longer actually trolling.

I kinda blame myself, because a few days ago I wondered who might still be in the clown car. Now I know and (I swear I’m not being snide) it explains a great deal.

@Mr. Mister – My original entry into this thread was pointing out that VD actually did something significant.

And…when you say something that is clearly untrue around here, some people will argue with you. Not everyone, obviously, because some people will just shake their heads and go on with their lives, but most of the folks who comment here like conversation, debate, discussion, discourse, and facts. Also books.

There is no way to convince you, because true believers are, by definition, unquestioning, but, no, VD has done nothing significant. He is the closest thing around to a cartoon villain, someone who makes a plan, has it go awry, announces he meant to do it and declares victory regardless. Rinse and repeat. If it ever did sound convincing, the pattern has happened so often that anyone with a lick of sense just finds the whole thing silly now.

I concur. We expect at least some subtlety in our trolls, maybe even the occasional song.

  6. Hampus Eckeman :

I am, in all modesty, the most humble superior intellect today.

“And yet, across the gulf of cyberspace, minds immeasurably inferior to ours regarded this blog with trollish eyes; and slowly, and haphazardly, they drew their plans against us.”

  7. Mr. Mister

It is according to anti-gamer gaters and I suspect some of the people here are of the same persuasion. I myself don’t consider it doxxing as such but it is not far from it.

“Anti-gamergates” (btw, get with the times, the approved made up name is aGGros) – ie *everyone* else – think that not referring to someone by their publicly known name instead of a persona is doxxing?

    Cite. Gendered insults, really?

Oh honey. First of all, to me at least, it’s not a gendered insult. When I use it for you, think of it as someone patiently addressing a small, and particularly petulant child. Second, thinking that someone is referring to you a woman does seem to get to you doesn’t it? May want to get it looked at.

    Show me the police reports.

Clearly, beyond not seeing a distinction, you also don’t understand how a comparison is made.

My original entry into this thread was pointing out that VD actually did something significant.

Aaah. I see where the confusion arises from. You see, to many of us here, Day acting like an arse isn’t actually something significant. Significant would be him at any point not behaving like an arse, but I suspect that would be beyond his intellect.

…Aaron’s constant lying and making shit up.

Again, cite. Remember, a difference of opinion is not lying.

  8. Aaron and JJ can play a little rougher than I usually would but generally in response to someone who has been rude*. If you’re rude, squalling when people aren’t sweetness and light in return just looks plain silly. Don’t start it if you don’t want to deal with it.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Aaron (or JJ) lie.

On a more general note, I wish people wouldn’t reach for that accusation when all it was is a disagreement. Even amongst squabbles between regulars here, where good faith is generally presumed, people use it sometimes (or ‘disingenuous’). Aside from my personal discomfort with it as an accusation (which I’ve explained before) it strikes me as being a little lazy. If they’re lying you don’t have to make the effort to see their point of view, you can just dismiss it…

*Or, more rarely, when someone speaks for a group without checking whether people in that group agree, which is at least related to rudeness even if it’s accidental.

  9. My original entry into this thread was pointing out that VD actually did something significant.

Sorry, no, he didn’t. You seem not to realize just how trivial Beale actually is.

Something so significant Gerrold found it necessary to hand out rectums. and it felt like putting my foot in a hornets nest.

Except he didn’t hand out “rectums”. He handed out asterisks. Tiny little symbols that are used to denote things too minor to put in the actual text of a record. Your inability to understand this seems to be in line with your inability to understand basic terms and phrases.

Just buzzing everywhere. Then it kinda spiraled out of control as this commentariat usually does when faced with a single differing opinion. Why is it that you have no dissenters here?

There are plenty of dissenters here. Your reading of a single thread in which you’ve done little except spout inanities and demonstrate that you don’t understand the meaning of words has led you astray. Then again, abject ignorance appears to be the normal condition for you, so it isn’t surprising that you got this wrong as well.

I also have a serious problem with Aaron’s constant lying and making shit up.

Thus far all you’ve done is demonstrate you are ignorant on every issue you’ve tried to opine upon while also showing everyone else that you have a limited grasp of vocabulary. Based upon your clownish presentation, pretty much everyone has determined that you are either stupid and boring or stupid and silly. You may as well just smear white grease paint on your face and put on a red nose.

  10. I would have thought that calling someone “honey” is condescending but not gendered, since it’s primarily a term of endearment that can be equally applied to men as to women (or, indeed, non-binary individuals).

When used as an insult, it’s belittling, but not gendered. Or am I wrong? A quick check on movie quotes on IMDb has it referring to both men and women without apparent distinction.

  11. If you’re in the South, it’s handed out liberally to all. I called a (male) con-goer honey about two hours ago, and my (female) dog honey roughly once an hour.

  12. In all fairness, I can see how someone would honestly consider “honey” to be gendered, depending on experience and context.

I still find it…something… that the current (albeit repackaged) piñata is particularly fussed that someone, somewhere may have referred to them as a woman, as opposed to any sort of honest perception that it is a gendered insult.

  13. @Camestros Felapton

I’ve often thought that the appeal of trolls is their lack of subtlety. They are so obviously wrong–and in ways anyone can point out–it’s hard not to reply. They’re low-hanging fruit and a good excuse to show your wit. It’s much harder to respond to a more thoughtful and substantive comment–or make an original comment of your own.

Of course, I also suspect trolls are mythological. We like to pretend they can’t actually believe what they say. I’m pretty sure most do.

  14. What? You think that someone whose current nom de blogge repeats a male honorific might be concerned about being considered female? Naaah…

Sheesh. And after I called him Dude.

  15. Mr. Mister: Nah, I’m just your garden variety jester. And the material is not new. Nothing ever changes here. Vox gets place 6/5 and he is insignificant… I am just trying to poke a hole in your bubble and failing spectacularly. But at least I am having fun.

Translation: I don’t see any value in participating genuinely here, I just like to come in and post a bunch of irrational nonsensical gobbledygook as a way of demonstrating that I have no idea what I’m talking about.

    Okay then. Thanks for clarifying.

  16. Sorry, but would someone explain why Goodreads deleted Vox. Did he violate PC hypersensitivities or something?

  17. @Troy:

Sorry, but would someone explain why Goodreads deleted Vox. Did he violate PC hypersensitivities or something?

    Sure. You go with that.

  18. VD gave the latest Alinsky space opera a mere 3 star rating, though he said in his review that he’d have given it 4 stars if only it had been twice as long. So, not entirely fair.

I don’t know. I’ve never felt the need to find a community dedicated to SFF. There is site called slatestarcodex.com that grew from the less wrong community and I have been reading more and more lately. It is full of nerds and they have weekly or bi-weekly open threads. Might be a good place to talk books.

If you were anything like my tribe I’d suggest Torgersen’s or Correia’s place. Baen’s bar might be worth a look too but I’ve never been.

It would depend how you phrased it, but I would hope not.

I haven’t even phrased it and already we get this:
    1.”Crocodile tears…”

2.”Oh honey. First of all, to me at least, it’s not a gendered insult. When I use it for you, think of it as someone patiently addressing a small, and particularly petulant child.”

3.”If you’re rude, squalling when people aren’t sweetness and light in return just looks plain silly. Don’t start it if you don’t want to deal with it.”

Politics, no. Culture, maybe, inasmuch as disagreements should be kept civil – which is not necessarily the same as without passion – and arguments should be less, as you say yourself, personal sniping and strawmanning, and more arguing your points and defending against objections and counter-arguments. Even bad personal disagreements are better when pursued this way. We’re far from perfect here when it comes to sticking to those ideals, but we do try. Because honestly we’re all familiar with how Bealean rhetoric works at this point.

I am nice those that are nice and not to those that are not. Have I been rude to you?

Again, neither is remotely like doxxing, since both are a matter of very public record, though I should point out that Mike frowns on dragging those legal problems into discussions of the Hugo controversy. But if you’re interested in VD the person, his name and his background are both trivially easy to discover. Constantly reiterating it, often with built-in inaccuracies or misunderstandings, doesn’t achieve much for all that, yes, people enjoy doing it.

It doesn’t achieve much because VD has already been purged from the SFWA and is not employed by someone likely to fire him from SJW mobbing. They do it because they wish to hurt and shame him in the real world. That he is not vulnerable does not negate that intent.

Not sure why Mike hasn’t told you what my previous handle was but it was aeou.

The last time I was here one of the funniest insults I got was being misgendered. Funny because it is a double edged sword for your side as even implying that women are inferior in any way is thought-crime. I decided to invite that again and boy did you step in it.

I am still not what you project me to be. I am not your mental strawman image of an overcompensating southern bible-thumping good old boy. I am a still Swedish atheist living in Sweden. If you want to misgender me AFK I will be in Helsinki (Hellre lite skit i hörnen än ett rent Helsinki) wearing a shirt with my old handle and I will bring special Swedish assault-feminists as protection against your frankly hideously wounding insults to my masculinity.

Now, let’s get back to proving Aarons claim. I believe someone mentioned a Mr. Gannon but couldn’t or wouldn’t link. I assume you agree that KE does not apply since she hasn’t been mentioned again.

I suggest you go back and read the thread in its entirety, since you’ve apparently missed numerous posts.

As far as Gannon, VD’s post excoriating him is here. And a link to VD excoriating him on Correia’s blog was already provided to you, as was the link where VD turned on Kary English.

  24. ae? o, u…

Funny because it is a double edged sword for your side as even implying that women are inferior in any way is thought-crime. I decided to invite that again and boy did you step in it.

Oh, honey. You really don’t get how this works, do you? The best insults have less to do with what the insulter thinks than what the insultee thinks.

And if you’re looking for me in Helsinki, I’m two meters tall and expect to be in the company of the best Finnish metal band led by a female vocalist… I expect your assault feminists are already fans. I shouldn’t be hard to miss.

I believe someone mentioned a Mr. Gannon but couldn’t or wouldn’t link.

I’m so tempted to pull him out from behind a potted plant right now, but I don’t think Chuck wants to be bothered. Of course, you could ask him yourself; you can contact him at http://charlesegannon.com/wp/contact-us/

If you were anything like my tribe I’d suggest Torgersen’s or Correia’s place.

I’ve been there. If the regular commenters there are your metric for “good or semi-good people,” and their level of discourse is your idea of rational civility, there’s really nothing I can say to get through to you. Our dictionaries for those concepts must be very, very different.

  26. Now, let’s get back to proving Aarons claim. I believe someone mentioned a Mr. Gannon but couldn’t or wouldn’t link.

You’re not very good at this. Links were provided long ago. The fact that you didn’t notice them or read them isn’t our problem. Do you ever get tired of being wrong all the time?

I assume you agree that KE does not apply since she hasn’t been mentioned again.

Everyone pretty much agrees that VD’s turning on English has been established, and doesn’t want to keep rubbing your nose in it. But if you want us to, we will.

  27. Where do you suggest good or semi-good people hang out online if not here? Honest question.

If you were anything like my tribe I’d suggest Torgersen’s or Correia’s place.

That’s just funny. We pretty much have JJ and Aaron here who have the spoons to continually argue vehemently against the same old debunked and refuted puppy points, and neither of them are 1/10 as aggressive or rude as a large chunk of Torgersen’s posters, MGC, etc..

  28. I don’t think I’ve seen honey used so much since I worked for a Texan company. They called everyone honey. It took a little while to get used to when anyone was up visiting us in the Massachusetts office.

Didn’t we used to attract a better quality of troll?

  29. Tasha Turner:

Didn’t we used to attract a better quality of troll?

Yes, back when they were made with the finest juicy chunks of fresh Cornish Ram’s bladder, emptied, steamed, flavoured with sesame seeds, whipped into a fondue, and garnished with lark’s vomit.

  30. @Hampus

And this is why Stylish exists.

Except Mr Mister’s not on it [the Filer block script], and I don’t know how to add him. (I looked at the directions, but I couldn’t figure out how to “add another line” to the 12 people that are already there.)

  31. I looked at the directions, but I couldn’t figure out how to “add another line” to the 12 people that are already there.

Copy one of the existing lines and then replace the string of text in it with this: 2c8af0645b23f0dda57aae5f17302a3b

  32. @ULTRAGOTHA and redheadedfemme:

You’re welcome. I just went ahead and did it myself. There’s no more candy in that pinata.

Thanks for your answer but, hahaha no. At Baen, the only people I’m interested in following are Tony Daniel & Lois McMaster Bujold. I’ve looked at other spaces in the bar and they are generally not spaces that would welcome someone like me. Torgersen & Correia’s personal blogs are definitely not welcoming of someone like me.

I’m a New Zealander, a country the average American (USA-ian) would regard as rather left wing & socialist. I’m also a Person of Colour. To the typical commenter at Torgersen & Correia’s blog I might as well be a communist.

  34. Nigel, your civility recommendation seems backward. The more civil I get the more abuse I get. Can you explain?

  35. Mister Mister: I hope you have the best possible day on this occasion of David Bowie’s passing. Bittersweet for me. I’m going to try to find a copy of Stage, the great live double-LP from 1979, to listen to today, then dive into Bowie’s recently released, and I suppose final, studio album, which is supposed to be very good.

  36. @Jim Henley, I’ve heard one song off the new Bowie and it was the best thing I’ve heard of his in years. Reminded me in quality of his epic 70s era.

Now playing Ziggy Stardust and really understanding how tear jerking this album is.
