Renovation has announced two more notable art exhibits fans can see at the 2011 Worldcon.

Fifty works from the collection of Khen Moore will be shown. Moore, a long-time Nashville fan and devoted art-lover, died in 2009. There will be art by Chesley Bonestell, Richard Powers, Ed Emshwiller, Paul Lehr, John Schoenherr, Vincent Di Fate, Ed Valigursky and Ron Miller. Few of these pieces have been seen in the decades since Moore acquired them.

Another special exhibit, loaned by the Heinlein Society, will be three paintings once owned by Robert and Virginia Heinlein and displayed in their home. They are a portrait of Nichelle Nichols as Star Trek’s Lt. Uhura, by Kelly Freas; “The Green Hills of Earth” by Fred Ludekens, which accompanied the publication of that famous “Future History” story by Heinlein in The Saturday Evening Post in 1947; and a Chesley Bonestell moonscape, published by LIFE Magazine in 1946 as part of an article titled “A Trip to the Moon by Rocket.”

Reno, Nevada, USA – Renovation, the 69th World Science Fiction Convention, has added two spectacular special exhibits and confirmed a third high-profile sponsor for its science fiction and fantasy art activities.

The first special exhibit will feature over 50 works from the extraordinary collection of the late Kenneth A. Moore, long-time Nashville fan, convention runner, and SF art lover. His passion for art led him to amass a collection of astonishing size and range, with pieces dating from the 1940s through his death in 2009. Luminaries represented in the collection include Chesley Bonestell, Richard Powers, Ed Emshwiller, Paul Lehr, John Schoenherr, Vincent Di Fate, Ed Valigursky, Ron Miller and many more. Most of the pieces that will be exhibited have not been seen in the decades since Ken acquired them – some have never been displayed.

The second special exhibit, kindly lent by the Heinlein Society, comprises three paintings once owned by Robert and Virginia Heinlein and displayed in their home. Renovation is also delighted to announce that the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists (ASFA) has joined the Frank Foundation and IlluxCon as a sponsor of Art @ Renovation, the umbrella that covers all of Renovation’s art events, exhibits, and programming.

ASFA (www.asfa-art.org) is a 501(c)(3) which exists to educate the public about science fiction and fantasy art by encouraging artistic talent, supporting the efforts and needs of working artists, and facilitating networking among artists, publishers, art patrons, art directors, art show directors, collectors, art students and anyone interested in in the genre. ASFA has long been associated with Worldcon, particularly through the Chesley Awards. The Chesley Awards have been traditionally presented by ASFA at Worldcon since 1985 for individual works and achievements in the field.

The 2011 Chesley Awards ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 18, as the opening event of Renovation’s Art Night, a festival of the visual arts in SF. Full details can be found at www.renovationsf.org/art-night.php.
