Kickstarter Started to Fund Fourth Long List Anthology

David Steffen has launched a Kickstarter appeal to publish Long List Anthology Volume 4, designed to celebrate more of the fiction loved by the Hugo Award voting audience.

Every year the Hugo Award administrators release a longer list of stories that received the most nominations by the fans who vote for the Hugo Awards. The purpose of the Long List Anthology is to get more of the works loved by Hugo Award voters to readers in one convenient package.

Backers have already pledged $1,607 toward its initial $1,800 goal with 18 days to go. The base goal includes only the short stories. There will be stretch goals to add novelettes.

The cover art is by Amanda Makepeace.

Steffen says the authors of the listed stories have agreed they can be reprinted in the anthology.

WHAT STORIES WILL BE IN THE ANTHOLOGY?

Short Stories (base goal)

  • “Don’t Press Charges and I Won’t Sue” by Charlie Jane Anders
  • “Zen and the Art of Starship Maintenance” by Tobias S. Buckell
  • “The Scholast in the Low Waters Kingdom” by Max Gladstone
  • “Paradox” by Naomi Kritzer
  • “Waiting Out the End of the World in Patty’s Place Cafe” by Naomi Kritzer
  • “Utopia, LOL?” by Jamie Wahls
  • “Confessions of a Con Girl” by Nick Wolven

Novelettes (stretch goal at $2900)

  • “Angel of the Blockade” by Alex Acks
  • “Pan-Humanism: Hope and Pragmatics” by Jess Barber and Sara Saab
  • “The Fisher of Bones” by Sarah Gailey
  • “Crispin’s Model” by Max Gladstone
  • “The Worshipful Society of Glovers” by Mary Robinette Kowal
  • “A Human Stain” by Kelly Robson
  • “The Dark Birds” by Ursula Vernon
  • “Waiting on a Bright Moon” by JY Yang

Steffen notes, “This project is not endorsed by nor affiliated with the Hugo awards, WSFS, WorldCon, or any associated entities. The Hugo name is used with permission.”

The first three volumes have sold more than 10,000 copies.

  1. Hey all, haven’t posted in dogs months but read the File regularly.

I tried to support this project for the fourth year and got a weird ‘error’ message from Kickstarter when I was trying to give money that I had to sign in to my Facebook account so they could access my friends list?!?!?!

I contacted Kickstarter by email (which wasn’t readily available info, btw) and asked wt&*^% they needed my friends list for. They just emailed me back saying they had disconnected my Kickstarter app from my account, which I had never connected to start with, and that I could now sign into Kickstarter with my Facebook name and password in order to support this project and ‘oopsie’ sharing my friends list was supposed to be voluntary (although there was no obvious way to opt out when I first tried to donate…I tried!).

Did anything like this happen to anyone else?

Still not sure why I need to sign in with my Facebook info and not sure if I’ll support the project if Kickstarter insists, they already have me connected to my Facebook account. I can’t remember clearly but did we have to sign in with our Facebook accounts in previous years? I don’t remember for sure.

Does anyone have a way to contact Dave Steffen so I can let him know that he may be losing some support if others are as put off by these requirements as I am (the sharing friends list thing)? I can’t contact him through Kickstarter until I sign in with my Facebook password.

  2. Junego, I don’t HAVE a Facebook account, and I’m sure I’m not the only one. So I guess they don’t want my money….

  3. junego, you can definitely create an account with your email rather than use Facebook. I am not sure whether you can connect prior supported projects to it, though.

  4. Hi junego, it’s nice to see you!

When I went to back this project, there was a nag in the upper right demanding that I log in with Facebook. I ignored this and used the “Sign In” function instead, and was able to back the project that way. If you can’t get to that feature, sign out of Facebook before loading the page and see if that will work.

  5. Hi back, JJ.

Thx to all for the suggestions. Logging off of the Fbook finally worked, though I had to go through a couple of further contortions at Kickstarter. I have no memory of ever creating a Kickstarter account, but I also had to delete that account (wherever it came from)!

I realized that Kickstarter had contacted me about this years Long List at my Fbook email, but I thought I had been using my outside business email for the previous Long List Anthologies, which is my usual practice for non personal communications. Didn’t save previous emails on iPad, though, and too lazy to check on my computer email cache.

I would permanently delete Fbook, but that’s how I keep track of family and friends, plus the hub is an avid user, so I need my account to keep track of what he’s up to that he forgets to tell me about ;-p . After all the revelations wrt Fbook this year, I turned off/deleted all apps, so I was really startled to see the Kickstarter app on my account and active! I REALLY don’t trust them any more.

ETA: And I backed the project!!

  6. The Stretch Goal has been reached, so the novelettes will be included. If you were waiting for that, no need to wait any longer.
