Online Ceremony Planned for
2020 Philip K. Dick Award

Norwescon, in conjunction with the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society, invites fans to view online the presentation of the 2020 Philip K. Dick Award on Friday, April 10 at 7 p.m. PST.

The restrictions put in place to address the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of Norwescon this year, and the in-person Philip K. Dick Award ceremony. Instead, Norwescon will stream the ceremony on YouTube. The weblink will be made available later this week on the Philip K. Dick Award page on the Norwescon web site, and on Norwescon’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages.

The 2019 Philip K. Dick nominees are:

  • The Outside, by Ada Hoffmann (Angry Robot)
  • Velocity Weapon, by Megan E. O’Keefe (Orbit)
  • All Worlds Are Real: Short Fictions, by Susan Palwick (Fairwood Press)
  • Sooner or Later Everything Falls Into the Sea: Stories, by Sarah Pinsker (Small Beer Press)
  • The Little Animals, by Sarah Tolmie (Aqueduct Press)
  • The Rosewater Redemption, by Tade Thompson (Orbit)

  1. I just set up a Google calendar in an attempt to capture all the various online events that are happening. (I know there were some last week that I’ve now missed.)

If anyone knows of any others not on that calendar, please let me know, ideally on Twitter @ErsatzCulture, although I try to keep up with items and comments posted here.

Alternatively, if anyone is already maintaining a calendar like this, please let me know, as I’d be quite happy not to have the responsibility for trying to keep this one up-to-date 🙂

  2. Thanks, John! I’m gonna keep your calendar open in its own window so I don’t miss too much by accident. 🙂

What time zone are you in?

  3. @Contrarius

Sounds like you’ve sorted it out, but I when I added the events to the calendar, I made sure they had the time zone set appropriately, at least as far as I could tell what they were.

In theory, that link should open in whatever your local time zone is (there’s some small text at the bottom of the page, which I guess you might have seen). I don’t see any way you can alter the displayed time zone within that cut down Google Calendar UI, but you can tweak the URL to pass a “ctz” value to force a timezone e.g. https://calendar.google.com/calendar/embed?src=ersatzculture.com_ptkjmlc2v0el47qde475nb754g%40group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America%2FLos_Angeles for US west coast. Working out what values it accepts are left as an exercise for the reader…

Also, I’m not sure if that cut-down page auto-updates if/when I add any more events, so you might be advised to refresh the page sooner or later.

  4. @John —

Yeah, I don’t typically do Google calendars, but I figured out that the Hugo announcement on your calendar was showing up as correct for my timezone, which means all the others should show up appropriately as well. And fer shur, I’ll be refreshing the page!

Thanks again for putting it up!
