Paul Turner found his own way out of the Sierras after the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department called off its search. Turner a long-time LASFSian, was reported missing in the Kennedy Meadows area of southeastern Tulare County at the end of last week after he failed to return from a hike when expected.

The 78-year-old resident told a friend he got lost, and eventually made his way down despite a lack of food or water.

The Fresno Bee reports that on Sunday, the Tulare County Search and Rescue Team working with the Inyo County Sheriff’s Department ended the search, saying Turner could not be found.

However, he is now known to be back safe.

Turner’s claims to fannish fame include starting the LASFS building fund, which led to LASFS becoming the first sf club to buy its own clubhouse.
