Although two sf/fantasy novels made the shortlist in the 2009 Ruth & Sylvia Schwartz Children’s Book Awards in the YA/Middle Reader category, they were shut out of the awards.

Taking the Middle/Reader Young Adult honours was Alma Fullerton for Libertad (Fitzhenry & Whiteside), while Mélanie Watt won the Picture Book prize for Chester’s Back! (Kids Can Press).
