By Carl Slaughter: The first time Jim Johnson wrote Star Trek, he worked with the legendary Dean Wesley Smith.  Now he’s writing for the new Star Trek: Adventures roleplaying game by Modiphius. Then he wrote his own series, Pistols & Pyramids, a magic western. Now he’s switched genres with his new Potomac Shadows series, an urban paranormal fantasy set in Washington, DC . Awakening the Fates was released in July. The sequels come out in October and December.

“I read Dean’s Star Trek novels for years and then was excited when he took on the editing role for the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds anthology contests. I submitted 16 stories to him over the course of 5 years and he bought three of them. I continued to learn from him and took several of the writing workshops he and his wife Kris Rusch offer. His smart insights on the business and the craft of writing were key pieces in the foundation of my writing career. And, the three SNW sales all qualified as professional sales, which served to secure my membership in SFWA 8 years ago. Since becoming a member of SFWA, I have volunteered in a number of capacities and helped the organization figure out how to enable independent authors to gain membership.”
