The Worst Movie Golden Bracket: The Finalizeling

By Hampus Eckerman: I have counted the number of votes for the different movies nominated by the filers. Now it is time to finalize the list before the bracket begins.

Please take a look at the list below and add your nominations (I’m keeping the old ones in a spreadsheet, so you can’t make duplicates). Note that for some of the nominated movies, there were several movies with the same titles. I have then picked the year I thought most likely. If you want to correct me there, please do so.

In a few cases, the movie did not exist at all because there had been a mix-up in the title. I have then used the magic google search and found movies with names that are very close and added those to the list instead. I hope they are the correct ones.

So without much further ado, here is the current list. Let the nominations continue.

  1. Awesome work, Hampus.

You’ve got what looks like the Swedish title up for SW2 by the way. I can’t hate that one myself because it has seismic charges and Temuera Morrison.

  2. Well shoot, sounds like we can nominate what we (dis)like?

I nominate “Out of Africa” (and yes, I’m serious)

    That f***ing movie.

  3. Watched Max Payne over the weekend. It deserves to be higher up in the list of worst movies ever.

  4. I like it! Looking forward to the brackets.

(And, if I may plug the bad movie awards show that I am involved with (The Smithee Awards), we are having a 25-year-retrospective-of-sorts in Ann Arbor, MI (USA) on October 21. It’s free, except for me — I have already purchased nearly $100 of junk food, and there is more to come).

  5. Hey, no new movies! This is nominations of the movies already on the list to see which ones will be in the final bracket.

Depending on if I think it is even possible to have a bracket with so few nominations per movie.

  6. @Hampus Eckerman

Hey, no new movies! This is nominations of the movies already on the list to see which ones will be in the final bracket.

Oops. From the list of previous nominees, I definitely chose “Santa Claus v. the Martians”

  7. I choose Shock Treatment because it is distinguished among all the other crap listed. (A) It’s the sequel to one of the most successful movies of all time (Rocky Horror Picture Show) and yet was still a dismal box office failure. (B) I am unable to completely forget it because it had a catchy song (Little Black Dress) that managed to stay partially active in my brain for several decades.

  8. Huh. People are really bitter about Phantom Menace, aren’t they. I mean it’s bad, but nowhere at the level or Reptilicus or Manos or The Flying Claw (which isn’t even on this list)…

Ah well, if I have to nominate anything, it’s Manos. It’s in a special category of direness all on its own.

  9. How many movies are required for the bracket? I would take the ones with the most votes, i.e., the 5-4-3-2-votes and the 1-votes that are repeated to fill out the bracket. To that end, I’ll double down on these from the 1-vote list.

    Independence Day: Resurgence
    Ultraviolet
    Beware! The Blob
Battlefield Earth (from 2 vote list. Siskel and Ebert were apocalyptic over that one)
    Leonard Part 6
Star Wars: Episod II – Klonerna anfaller (This is the Swedish translation of Attack of the Clones, I’m assuming?)
Also, M. Night Shyalaman isn’t faring too well, is he? Unless I’m mistaken, I thought I saw three of his movies.

  10. I want to double down on some of the 1-vote movies … but I can’t remember which ones were my vote, at which point that feels more like double-dipping.

  11. Rose Embolism ,

A big part is due to expectations. Yes “Phantom Menace” is bad. But given it’s a *long* awaited Star Wars movie? By George Lucas? That’s when *worst* *movie* *ever* comes into play.

  12. Kevin Hogan.

“I want to double down on some of the 1-vote movies … but I can’t remember which ones were my vote, at which point that feels more like double-dipping.”

No problem. I have your old votes in a spreadsheet, so you can’t double dip.

And I think that it will be very hard to hold a bracket if movies only get 2-3 nominations. I’m not sure there will be enough people to find something to vote for then.

  13. The first fifteen minutes of HOOROR OF PARTY BEACH are pretty funny. Very bad editing.

THE CREEPING TERROR should be given more votes.

There was a documentary issued about the CREEPING TERROR, titled THE CREEP BEHIND THE CAMERA. The director was a mental case and a con artist. Not a good combination.

  14. Wait, I’m confused. I thought brackets meant you do one-on-one votes, and each winner gets to be a one-on-one vote with the other winners, until you finally pick an absolute winner. Where ‘winner’ in this case is actually a loser. But you know what I mean.

  15. Xopher, I think Hampus’ point is that with so few nominations, the odds are that most people won’t have seen enough of the nominees to actually vote.

I suppose that people might vote for the one they saw-and-hated over the one they didn’t see at all, which will lead to the paradoxical “most popular really bad movie” as first (last!) place…

  16. Oops, my mistake. Well, I’ll just have to be comforted by the fact that “Out of Africa” will always be the worst movie ever…in my heart.

  17. @Hampus, here are all my +1s (many of which will be +0s when you compare to your spreadsheet):
