  1. I didn’t know Manley Wade Wellman lived in Chapel Hill, NC. I went to the University of North Carolina there in the ’60s…but that was before I got into SF and fandom, so I didn’t know or know of, Wellman. The most famous UNC alumnus I met at college was Kay Kyser (1905 – 1985), who also retired there. Kyser was famous for his ’30s-’40s “Kollege of Musical Knowledge” radio program, and the films he made in the ’40s; but those weren’t SF–though I learned recently that Kyser appeared once as himself (i.e., as the “Ol’ Perfesser” at the “Kollege”) in a 1949 “Batman” comic book (“The Mystery Broadcast” in Detective Comics # 144), and was instrumental in helping Batman capture the villain.
