The 2022 GRAMMY Awards were presented in a ceremony that aired April 3. The complete list of winners is at the link.

The two winners of genre interest I recognized are The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical, and the soundtrack for the animated movie Soul (which tied with another nominee).

  1. Soul didn’t have to share its award when it won an Oscar and BAFTA.

I give up: why is this genre? (totally serious, not being sarcastic)

  3. JJ: Bridgerton in broad outline is alternate history. Borrowing from the Wikipedia —

Bridgerton is set in an alternate history with a racially integrated London where people of color are members of the ton, some with titles granted by the sovereign. Creator Chris Van Dusen was inspired by historical debate over the 1940s African ancestry claims of Queen Charlotte “…to base the show in an alternative history in which Queen Charlotte’s mixed race heritage was not only well-established but was transformative for Black people and other people of color in England.”

To what degree the songs in the Unofficial Musical directly address these themes I don’t know.

  4. Mike Glyer: Bridgerton in broad outline is alternate history.

Ah, that makes sense. I haven’t seen the show, I only know what I’ve read about it, because for me the kissing parts are a bug, not a feature. 😀

  5. Oh Adam Neeley plays bass for The 8-Bit Big Band. He has some terrific music education and think-pieces on YouTube.

    Also: yay for Soul!

JJ, a few weeks ago Facebook served me an ad for a service called VidAngel, which lets you skip over the sex and/or violence in a TV show or movie. The ad copy was all about “protect your family from the unacceptable!!!”, but it looks like it would be also be useful for anyone who wants to be protected from the boring.
