Pasgon Cancelled

The Pasgon committee has announced they are unable to host the 2017 British Eastercon in Cardiff, Wales:

Despite best efforts, the Pasgon committee has been unable to resolve a number of location issues to our satisfaction. Due to this, as well as some other issues, we have decided that Pasgon is no longer a viable Eastercon.

We apologise to those that supported Pasgon. We also apologise to those that we invited to be our guests of honour. We have not come to this decision lightly and we regret that we could not bring Eastercon to Wales for the first time. We have decided to withdraw at this point to make our position clear before Mancunicon. Hopefully this will give people time to consider in advance what needs to be to discussed at the Eastercon bid session. Further information will be posted on our website after Mancunicon.

Alison Scott suggested in a Livejournal comment the underlying cause is —

There was no combination of ‘amount the hotel wanted to charge the con’ and ‘number of members that would join under that scenario’ that gave confidence the convention was viable.

Pasgon would have been the first Eastercon in Wales. Welsh sf/f author Jo Walton was to have been one of the GoHs.

An earlier plan for a Cardiff Eastercon in 2016 also failed, while in the bidding stage, when the committee discovered the 2016 IAAF Half Marathon would be held in the city on Easter Sunday, affecting hotel room prices and availability.

Reportedly, fans are at work on a rescue bid for the 2017 British Eastercon.
