The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
Serenity (2005) – It wasn’t the first movie I took a date to, but it was the first one I bothered to revisit on disc afterward.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
    Young Frankenstein (1974)

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
    Time Bandits (1981)

  6. 1. This is Spinal Tap (1984)
Yeah, not quite as good, but much cultier. This was a really tough choice.

    2. The Princess Bride (1987)
Not going to vote for the one that already lost fair and square. Although I’d still vote this way even if that wasn’t a factor.

    3. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
Ooh, very tough choice. Still, this is about as culty as they get, so I’ll go with it.

    4. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
A truly painful choice! I’d curse the dice, but we’re getting down to the point where painful choices should be expected. This wins on cultiness.

    5. Tie. Neither one seems particularly culty, and I love ’em both, so I’ll abstain.

p.s. Hampus, “memorable” is more common/standard than “rememberable”. Not complaining, since I don’t speak your language at all, but just FYI.

  7. 1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
    This is Spinal Tap (1984)

    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
    Serenity (2005)
    The Princess Bride (1987)

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
    Labyrinth (1986)

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
    Young Frankenstein (1974)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
    Time Bandits (1981)
    Groundhog Day (1993)

  8. . DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
    This is Spinal Tap (1984)

    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
    The Princess Bride (1987)

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP
    Labyrinth (1986)
Ouch. I suspect Rocky Horror will win, so it doesn’t matter that I love them both.

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
    Young Frankenstein (1974)

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
    Groundhog Day (1993)

  9. Xtifr: Hampus, “memorable” is more common/standard than “rememberable”.

I noted that to Hampus, and edited it the first couple of times (imagine, Mike Glyer thinking he found something that needed copyediting!)

Then I realized I was depriving him of a leitmotif and started leaving it alone.

  10. He, come to think of it, I always add those lines by copy-pasting from my sent box, thus bypassing Mikes corrections. 😛

  11. 2. Serenity (No fair making me choose between these two!)
    3. Labyrinth
    4. Monty Python and the Holy Grail
    5. Groundhog Day

  12. This is going to required a crate of forehead cloths:

    1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
    This is Spinal Tap (1984)

Gotta go with Spinal Tap. It’s the 12″ henge that does it for me.

    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
    The Princess Bride (1987)

ACK! Ack ack ack! The one I re-watch more is the one I’ve voting for. Even though it’s a kissing book.

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

    The transducer will seduce ya.

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

<head-desk><head-desk><head-desk> (good thing the forehead clothes provide padding). Your mother was a hampster and your father smelled of elderberries.

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
    Time Bandits (1981)

Larcenous little people for the win.

  13. 1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
    The Princess Bride (1987)

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
    Time Bandits (1981)

  14. 1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964): down vote. Too much of an actually good and notable movie. Canon rather than cult.
This is Spinal Tap (1984): up vote: Cult

    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
Serenity (2005): It is a truth universally acknowledged that Firefly/Serenity must appear in each bracket and be excluded in this round. Axiomatically down voted.
The Princess Bride (1987) Up voted.

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975): Essence of cult. Up voted.
Labyrinth (1986): Tough. Cult by virtue of elevated children’s movie but this is a tough pairing and Rocky Horror wins. Down voted.

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
Young Frankenstein (1974): A strong contender but down voted.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975): A film so cult that it is now orthodxy but I can’t down vote it so I must up vote it.

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
Time Bandits (1981): Up voted. I know that means two Gilliam films but this is the essential one.
Groundhog Day (1993): Down voted. Great but more mainstream than cult.

  15. 1. Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

    2. The Princess Bride (1987)

    3. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

    4. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

    5. Groundhog Day (1993)

  16. 1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
    Serenity (2005)
    (after much wiping of forehead)

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP
    Labyrinth (1986)

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
    Groundhog Day (1993)

  17. 1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU: This is Spinal Tap is definitely more of a cult film. Strangelove is great, but hasn’t held up with a dedicated fan base the way Spinal Tap has.

    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING: The Princess Bride wins over Serenity for pretty much the same reasons as Spinal Tap in #1.

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP: The Rocky Horror Picture Show is pretty much the definition of cult movie, and I expect it to win overall.

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE: A hard, hard choice. A slight edge to Monty Python and the Holy Grail because IMHO Young Frankenstein probably has declined in popularity while Holy Grail just keep on going.

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD! Another close one. I’m going with Time Bandits, because Groundhog Day is a film I had no urge to rewatch, while Time Bandits can and does re-entertain me every few years.

  18. 1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
    This is Spinal Tap (1984)

I … what? The rounds are just going to be like this until the brackets conclude, aren’t they?

    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
    Serenity (2005)
    The Princess Bride (1987)

I re-read the book recently. Still holds up. I maintain that one could re-adapt the book and come up with a very different film that was still faithful to the source material.

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
    Labyrinth (1986)

    Touch’a touch’a touch’a touch the Goblin King.

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
    Young Frankenstein (1974)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

    …both films have castles.

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
    Time Bandits (1981)
    Groundhog Day (1993)

An interesting mash-up. I would watch this.

  19. 1. This is Spinal Tap (1984) Votin’ for the cultier one.
    2. The Princess Bride (1987) Both culty! Votin’ for the better one.
    3. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) Votin’ for the cultier one.
    4. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) Votin’ for the cultier one.
    5. Time Bandits (1981) Votin’ for the cultier one.

  20. 1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
This is Spinal Tap (1984) – almost the definition of a cult movie

    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
The Princess Bride (1987) – meta quality needs acknowledging

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) – no, this is almost the definition of…

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
Young Frankenstein (1974) – the b&w alone qualifies this

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
Groundhog Day (1993) – more quotable elements

  21. Not having voted in previous rounds, so please forgive the lame jokes.

    1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
    This is Spinal Tap (1984)

Abstain, because I still haven’t seen Dr. Strangelove.

    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
    Serenity (2005)
    The Princess Bride (1987)

Kinda inconceivable to vote any other way.

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
    Labyrinth (1986)

With apologies to David Bowie’s balls.

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
    Young Frankenstein (1974)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
    Time Bandits (1981)
    Groundhog Day (1993)

Now, where are them forehead cloths?

  22. 1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
    This is Spinal Tap (1984)

    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
    The Princess Bride (1987)

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!

    1.This is Spinal Tap (1984)

    2. The Princess Bride (1987)

    3. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

    4. I just can’t with this one, TIE, dammit!
    Young Frankenstein (1974)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

    5. Groundhog Day (1993)

    [weeps]

  24. 1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
    This is Spinal Tap (1984)

It doesn’t upset me. Don’t get the Spinal Tap love.

    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
    Serenity (2005)
    The Princess Bride (1987)

Now this one does upset me. Princess Bride wins out narrowly.

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
    Labyrinth (1986)

Again, a narrow win for Frank N. Further and the gang over Bowie and the gang.

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
    Young Frankenstein (1974)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
    Time Bandits (1981)
    Groundhog Day (1993)

Why do you have to pair the ones I don’t care about and the ones I do?

  25. 1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
    Labyrinth (1986)
    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Sadly, RHPC is cultier. But I’m lip-quivering at the thought of losing David Bowie’s Trousers.

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
    Young Frankenstein (1974)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
    Mel Brooks vs. Monty Python…

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
    Time Bandits (1981)
    Groundhog Day (1993)

  31. 1. Spinal Tap. None more culty — t’other’s mainstream.

    2. One forehead cloth, and one vote for Princess Bride.

    3. A whole crate of cloths, a mournful cry of “Bowie’s trousers!”, countered with “It’s just a jump to the left!” a great cursing of the dice and Hampus, many whispers about what’s the cultiest (well, yeah, RHPS) and yet… “Okay, we’re going with Labyrinth as a protest vote, but not complaining if it goes the other way”.

    4. More grumbling breaks out in the forehead cloth crate, but everyone agrees it has to be Holy Grail. And there was much rejoicing.

    5. Obviously Time Bandits. GD is completely mainstream.

  32. 1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
    This is Spinal Tap (1984)
    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
If I could only see one of these movies ever again, it would be Princess Bride. But Brownshirts are so cultish, so Serenity wins out.
    Serenity (2005)

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP
If I were a 14 year old girl, Labyrinth would win. But to the world’s and my regret, I’m not.

    Groundhog Day (1993)

  35. 2. The Princess Bride, still voting with my little princess
    3. (shifty eyed look left, shifty eyed look right) Serenity, it’s the only one left with a spaceship
    4. Monty Python and the Holy Grail, still voting with my little princesses
    5. (glances left, glances right) Young Frankenstein, can’t see it without thinking of my dad and then smiling

  36. 1. Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

    This is Spinal Tap (1984)

    Stonehenge gets nuked.

    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
    Serenity (2005)
    The Princess Bride (1987)

You killed my Reavers. Prepare to die.

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
    Young Frankenstein (1974)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
    Time Bandits (1981)
    Groundhog Day (1993)

    The travellers beat the looper.

  39. I vote with great despair.

    1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
    This is Spinal Tap (1984)

Love them both, but TIST is much cultier. Also, Strangelove is of its time and place, and thank god we no longer live in that time and place.

    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
    Serenity (2005)
    The Princess Bride (1987)

I hate you all. You will all vote for TPB, which is a movie I truly hate. Hate with sauce of hating.

    Labyrinth (1986)

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
    Young Frankenstein (1974)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
    Time Bandits (1981)
    Groundhog Day (1993)

  40. 2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
    The Princess Bride (1987)

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP
    Labyrinth (1986)

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

  41. 1. Dr. Strangelove. A. should not be paired with anything, ever. B. Voting for anything else is an afront to something major that really upsets me. Seriously? A mockumentary is more cultish than one of the greatest satires in history? Sometimes I seriously wonder about you people….

    2. The Princess Bride. Serenity is good, but Princess has a better theme song. (with lyrics or instrumental)

    3. Rocky Horror. Bowie…Curry…Bowie…Curry…CURRY. (Better songs too)

    4. Tie. Both. Young Python vs the Holy Frankenstein. Watch them simultaneously and start Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon right at the opening and Flying Monkies will appear.

    5. Neither. Both are second rate cults at best, destined to be absorbed into some other cult over time.

  42. 1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
    The Princess Bride (1987)

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
    Young Frankenstein (1974)

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
    Groundhog Day (1993)

  43. Cult Movie Bracket, First Fifth Element Quarter Final
    1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
Another of these horrible “better or cultier?” choices.

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP
    Labyrinth (1986)

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
    Young Frankenstein (1974)

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
    Time Bandits (1981)

  44. 2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
    The Princess Bride (1987)

    Those evil dice.

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
Groundhog Day (1993) – I quote it more, I’ve watched it more

  45. 1. This is Spinal Tap
Strangelove feels more like a historical artifact now.

    2. The Princess Bride
I knew half the dialogue before I ever saw the movie.

    3. The Rocky Horror Picture Show
The Time Warp beats the ballroom dancing. Barely.

    4. Pass. Never seen Young Frankenstein

    5. Time Bandits
Cultier. In my experience TB fans may be numerically fewer, but we make up for it in passionate intensity.

  46. 1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
    This is Spinal Tap (1984)

At this point, very few of the movies remaining meet my definition of cult. Which is idiosyncratic and a bit arbitrary, I admit. But it’s the only game in town, so…

    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
    Serenity (2005)
    The Princess Bride (1987)

    Abstain

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
    Labyrinth (1986)

Rocky Horror I can vote for gladly.

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
    Young Frankenstein (1974)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
    Time Bandits (1981)
    Groundhog Day (1993)

  47. 1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

    The Princess Bride (1987)

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
    Groundhog Day (1993)

  48. Forehead cloths on standby.

    1. DON’T LET THIS PAIRING UPSET YOU
Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

    We’ll meet again…

    2. THIS LANDING IS GONNA BE PRETTY INTERESTING
    Serenity (2005)

Ah, now it’s to the pain. Ah hell, I aim to misbehave.

    3. WITH A BIT OF A MIND FLIP
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

Is that a Graboid in your codpiece? RHPS still cultist.

    4. QUIET, DIGNITY AND GRACE
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

Auugh, because it has Iain fricking Banks in it!

    5. AND THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW… THE WORLD!
    Time Bandits (1981)
    Groundhog Day (1993)
