File 770 Turns 8

Happy birthday CROP

The File 770 blog is 8 years old today, and this is the first time I have ever celebrated — an idea I picked up from The Book Smugglers last week.

James H. Burns has written a special column for the occasion, and I am going to commemorate our epic bracket competitions from the past year.

Thanks to everyone who has shared their creativity in comments and posts. Help yourself to a slice of virtual cake!

  1. I only discovered File770 last year but what a find – now I read it every day. Thank you for such an awesome blog and happy 8th birthday!

  2. Second 8th?!
Do I get two slices of 8th Birthday cake?

Mike – thank you for all the work you put into making this haven for informed, funny and civilised conversation.

And Filers – thank you for a year’s worth of enthusiasm and entertainment, and for reawakening my passion for books.

  3. Happy birthday, eh? FILE 770 turns 8, eh? Well, *I* remember FILE 770 from almost 40 years ago. Indeed, the earliest FILE 770 in my collection is number 5 from back in 1978. OK, so we are *both* old pharts.

But you are still here, doing a variation of what you used to pub back then. Keep doing it, old friend.

  4. Happy Birthday File770 ! Thanks Mike for creating a site where we can all come together.

  5. Do we get extravagant gift bags? I hear all the best birthday parties offer gift bags to their guests. (Full Discloser: I’m not invited to many birthday parties.)

Best wishes on this vilest of days.

  6. Happy Birthday to FILE 770. (I too remember the early versions that Marty mentions above.) Thanks, Mike!

  7. Happy Blog Birthday! Thank you for all the hard work you do to keep it going! And thank you, fellow commenters, for being witty, informative, infuriating, creative, amusing, snarky, and kind. I come for the news, but stay for the comments.

Free virtual forehead cloths for everyone!

  8. I guess I’m missing something. Why is it “the vilest of days”?

Is this not “that wretched hive of scum and villainy?” What’s the point of being a scummy villain if you are not vile?

Maybe the filest of days would have been funnier.

  9. Happy birthday, FIle770! With extra thanks to our host and all the interesting people who hang out and comment and drive trolls into flouncing.

  10. Kendall: You beat me to the Boynton, you big meanie.

Thanks to OGH and the commentariat for making such an interesting, informative, and lively place to hang out!

(Virtual cake is always gluten free! I’ll have a slice.)

  11. Happy birthday file770.com .

Many thanks to OGH who provides links and commentary from around the bright and dark holes of the online world. Add great moderation skills which create a diverse community. Without those starters filers, like myself, would not have such great fodder for fascinating conversations, reasons to filk, and there would not be so much needed laughter and light added to the world.

  12. Happy Eighth Birthday!!!
    Did someone say Cake?:

Reluctantly blogged at the starting line
Keyboards clicking and clacking in time
The modem light flashes, the posts go up
Churning and burning, they yearn for the cup

    They deftly maneuver click-baiting ad-rank
Thoughts burning fast on an empty tank
Reckless and wild, they pour through the words
Their prowess is potent and secretly stern

As they scroll through the finish, the flags go down
The fans get up and they get out of town
The arena is empty except for one man
Still blogging and posting as fast as he can

The sun has gone down and the moon has come up
And long ago somebody left with the cup
But he’s blogging and posting and honing the words
And thinking of something for which he still burns

He’s writing the pixels, he’s going for scrolls
Seven Seventy, filed for our sci-fi need
Because he’s gracing and pacing and plotting the course
He’s writing and citing and riding on his horse
    He’s writing the pixels

No trophy, no flowers, no flashbulbs, no wine
He’s haunted by something he cannot define
Bowel-shaking brackets of dice and remorse
Assail him, impale him with asteroid strike force

In his mind, he’s still blogging, still making the grade
File Seven Seventy may her memory not fade
‘Cause he’s gracing and pacing and plotting the course
He’s writing and citing and riding on his horse

The sun has gone down and the moon has come up
And long ago somebody left with the cup
But he’s blogging and posting and honing the words
And thinking of something for which he still burns

‘Cause he’s writing the pixels, he’s going for scrolls
Seven Seventy, filed for our sci-fi need
Because he’s gracing and pacing and plotting the course
He’s writing and citing and riding on his horse
He’s blogging and posting and honing the words
He’s writing and citing and riding on his horse
He’s writing the pixels, he’s going for scrolls
    He’s writing the pixels

  13. Indeed; congratulation on File 770’s eighth birthday, and I look forward to all the fun to come. 2016 has not got off to the most cheerful of starts; we have lost people who went altogether too quickly. For me this is all the more reason to recognise and appreciate the wonderful things happening here and now; Carpe Diem!

  14. File770 is only 8 years old but has won 9 Hugo Awards and one special citation. I have a feeling that this August will make it an even 10th award.

  15. Kendall: You beat me to the Boynton, you big meanie.

Hell, Hampus beat me to the Eeyore.

So I’ll go with my fallback:

    Happy Birthday on you!
    Happy Birthday with you!
    Happy Birthday, File 770…
    Happy Birthday at you!

  16. In honor of File 770’s birthday, I will be making a chocolate layer cake with almond butter frosting between the layers and covered with dark chocolate ganache. Virtual cake for everyone!

    Happy Birthday File 770!

Congratulations Mike on creating a place that’s so fun to hang out in – hope we are all able to do so for many more years to come!

  17. “And then oneday all the scum met all the villains
And they knew they should go out on a spree
Whereupon Mike built a cozy hive here
And he called it File Seven Seven-ty…”

  18. Happy birthday! I see that someone beat me to an WOL^H^H^Howl quotation a long time ago. Much thanks for the work you put in, Mike.
