Michael Ansara Dies

Michael Ansara, who played the Klingon commander Kang in Star Trek, died July 31. He was 91. Ansara was one of only seven “Star Trek” actors to play his same character on three different versions of Trek. His last appearance as Kang was in 1996.

If you’re sufficiently antique, as I am, you are more likely to remember him for playing Cochise in the Broken Arrow tv series.

  1. He is also fondly remembered for portraying the title character in the Outer Limits episode “Soldier,” based on an Ellison story.

  2. My favorite role by Ansara was not on Star Trek but an episode of The Bill Cosby Show, “The Artist,” in which he portrayed a painter named Roddenberry who specializes in nude models. It’s a very charismatic, believable role for Ansara but I’ve always imagined the name couldn’t be a total coincidence, and that someone on the show named him for the Star Trek creator.
