  1. Looks beautiful visually, but Dwayne Johnson is no Robin Williams and his performance could wear itself thin for me. Nice trailer.

  2. That looks fabulous. Love the shots of kick-ass Moana pushing her boat to its limits. Also, “The ocean is a friend of mine,” wins the Internet for Understated Awesome.

  3. It seems weird to me having Polynesian people speaking with American accents but obviously, there is a substantial group of Polynesians who do because they are Americans. [and yes – obviously fantasy setting and ‘realism’ would imply people not speaking English at all. I’ll shut up now]

    The film looks gorgeous.

Ugh. Robin Williams wore thin for me before he’d finished with Mork and Mindy.

  5. @Camestros: You have to get out more. All the Polynesians I’ve ever met have various American accents (depending on whether they grew up in the continental US, Hawaii, or Samoa).

The artist formerly known as The Rock is pretty darn charming and has done voice work before — plus as a Samoan, he’s so enthusiastic about it.

  6. All the the Polynesians I have ever met spoke french, with a french accent. I wonder if we might have a recruitment bias there somewhere, people ?

  7. You’re thinking of French Polynesia (Tahiti/Tahitians, the Marquesas, etc.).
Polynesia is vast. Besides the islands the French lavished their colonial attentions on, it includes Hawaii, Samoa, Tonga, Easter Island, New Zealand, and many more groups of islands.
(Those being some of the lands the British, Germans, Spanish, and Americans graced with their own imperialist impulses.)
The indigenous peoples of all of those lands (actually, the descendants of the initial migrants) are Polynesians.

The trailer looks fantastic. I may actually go to see this, even if I (pretend) sigh at the introduction of yet another Disney princess …

  8. I have met Polynesians with Kiwi, American and French accents, plus Samoans and Tongans that have none of the above. Maybe I get out more? 😉

I had to watch that trailer three times before I figured out what bothered me. Dwayne Johnson mispronounces “Maui.” It’s a small thing, but still. It isn’t Mow-ee, it’s Maow-wee, with the stress on the first syllable. Anyway, it looks like a pretty movie and I’m sure my daughter will insist I see it with her, because she thinks all things Disney are the apogee of American culture.
