The Defying Doomsday Award is an annual shortlist and prize. The award jury comprises Twelfth Planet Press publisher, Alisa Krasnostein, and Defying Doomsday editors, Tsana Dolichva and Holly Kench. The award will grant one winner per year a cash prize of $200 in recognition of their work in disability advocacy in SFF literature.

Eligible works include non-fiction or related media exploring the subject of disability in SFF literature. Works must have been published in 2016.

The administrators say the shortlist will come out within two weeks, and the winner announced soon after that.

(7) WIN WWII QUICKER. Gregory Benford shares “The Big Idea” that led to his novel The Berlin Project.

How many more concentration camp victims would have survived if the war had ended one year earlier?  For one, Anne Frank. Most CC victims succumbed eventually to the rugged conditions… The difference between 1944 and 1945 as the end of the war is probably quite significant in terms of lives.

The central context for this novel came from the protagonist I chose to follow through it, Karl Cohen. I also folded in my experience of living in the US occupation of Germany in 1955-57, where my father commanded combat units.

Karl’s words made me think, because in the last year of war, whole societies collapsed. A million died each month, the Soviet Union captured many countries into subjugation, and the devastation of the Axis powers took decades to repair.

Alternative histories are ways of thinking. The entire history of nuclear weapons is interlaced with scientists considering the future, often using science fiction as a prompt. The 1913 “atomic bombs” of H. G. Wells and the Robert Heinlein and Cleve Cartmill stories in Astounding Science Fiction were indeed broadly discussed at Los Alamos –as told to me in detail by Teller.

The wartime investigation into the Astounding stories, as I depict from documents I found, now seems odd indeed. The fiction writers had no classified information at all, just good guesses. Still, this possibility was viewed as very important by the security agencies, including the FBI. As Robert Silverberg has wryly remarked, “Turning war secrets into second-rate SF stories might seem, to the dispassionate eye, a very odd way indeed of betraying one’s country.”

Karl Cohen was my father in law. In 2000 he was voted to be among the 50 most prominent American chemists of the 20th Century. But he was haunted by what he felt was his personal failure to convince the U.S. government to pursue the centrifuge approach during the war. He died in 2012 at age 99. Alas, I had only begun on the novel.

Death’s End by Cixin Liu, translated by Ken Liu

The final book in the Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy, Death’s End really goes for broke in its attempts to be an epic tale. I struggled through it for much the same reason I struggled through the first two books: the depictions of women are by turns baffling and infuriating. If you were bothered by that in the first two novels, I warn you it’s still at issue here. The woman at the center of Death’s End, engineer Cheng Xin, is by turns patronized, deified, and vilified both by the male characters and the narrative itself. If you can ignore this, and the author’s tendency toward paragraph upon paragraph of info-dumping, there are certainly the bones of a very compelling tale of humanity’s future within these pages. The science involved is fascinating, and if you’re on the hunt for oldschool hard science fiction this might fit the bill.

Verdict: Bypass unless you’ve read the first two and have a hankering for more hard SF.

(10) WHO IS NUMBER ONE? MeTV offers “TV Aliens, Ranked”.

Was this really a competition? Mr. Spock is beloved by the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise and fans of Star Trek alike. Even though Williams Shatner tried to take the lead on the original series, Spock’s likability and Leonard Nimoy’s depiction made him the most popular character on one of the most popular series of all time.

(11) WESTON OBIT. G.I. Joe inventor Stan Weston died May 1. The Hollywood Reporter recalls:

When Mattel’s Barbie dolls were introduced in 1960, Weston realized boys were an untapped market for the doll industry after noting that many of them played with Ken dolls. He conceived of the idea of a military action figure and in 1963 sold what would become G.I. Joe to Hasbro. The runaway hit would go on to be one of the most enduring toy lines in history, spawning hit TV shows and films as well.

…In 1989, he was among the inaugural class for the Licensing Industry Hall of Fame, which includes notables Walt Disney, George Lucas and Jim Henson.

Jerry Goldsmith Day

Today Oscar- and Emmy-winning composer Jerry Goldsmith posthumously received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He scored a vast number of movies, including many genre films. Director Joe Dante, for whom Goldsmith scored Gremlins, Explorers, and Innerspace, lent impetus to the award, saying he’d been “flabbergasted” to learn Goldsmith had not already received the honor. Dante told Variety, “Any film he scored was automatically improved tenfold.”

(15) COMPETITIVE LENGTHS. Greg Hullender says, “Inspired by a blog post from Rich Horton I did a quick analysis of the lengths of novellas overall vs. the lengths of the ones that are Hugo finalist.” — “Story Lengths and Awards: When Does Size Matter?” at Rocket Stack Rank.

It looks like (this year, at least), when it came to getting nominated for the Hugo, longer stories definitely did better than shorter ones in the Novella category and (less dramatically) in the Novelette category, but length had no effect on short stories.

In fact, the effect is so dramatic that the longest novella published by any print magazine is shorter than the shortest novella in the Hugo finalist list!

(16) DIAL 2140. Carl Slaughter did a mini-roundup on a popular new novel.

The New Yorker described Kim Stanley Robinson as “generally acknowledged as one of the greatest living science-fiction writers.”  The Atlantic described Robinson as “the gold-standard of realistic, and highly literary, science-fiction writing.” Robinson’s novels have won the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and Campbell awards.  His body of work won the Heinlein award.  He was an instructor at Clarion and the 68th World Science Fiction Convention guest of honor.  Major themes in his novels:  nature and culture, ecological sustainability, climate change and global warming, economic and social justice, and scientists as heroes.

“The environmental, economic, and social themes in Robinson’s oeuvre stand in marked contrast to the libertarian science fiction prevalent in much of science fiction (Robert A. Heinlein, Poul Anderson, Larry Niven, and Jerry Pournelle being prominent examples), and his work has been called the most successful attempt to reach a mass audience with a left wing and anti-capitalist utopian vision since Ursula K. Le Guin’s 1974 novel, The Dispossessed.”  –  Wiki

Robinson’s latest novel, NewYork 2140 , which came out in March from Orbit, is about residents of New York coping the the drastic affects of climate change, namely rising sea levels.

As the sea levels rose, every street became a canal. Every skyscraper an island. For the residents of one apartment building in Madison Square, however, New York in the year 2140 is far from a drowned city.

There is the market trader, who finds opportunities where others find trouble. There is the detective, whose work will never disappear — along with the lawyers, of course.

There is the internet star, beloved by millions for her airship adventures, and the building’s manager, quietly respected for his attention to detail. Then there are two boys who don’t live there, but have no other home– and who are more important to its future than anyone might imagine.

Lastly there are the coders, temporary residents on the roof, whose disappearance triggers a sequence of events that threatens the existence of all– and even the long-hidden foundations on which the city rests.

(17) SPINRAD REVIEWED. Rob Latham shares his qualified enthusiasm for Norman Spinrad’s The People’s Police in “An Unkempt Jeremiad” at LA Review of Books.

I would affirm that The People’s Police is a continuous pleasure to read were it not for the poor production values that persistently hobble the story. While the physical book is well designed, including an arresting dust-jacket by Michael Graziolo, the text itself is littered with distracting typos, oddly repeated words (e.g., “his vehicle had come around again to where where Luke was standing”), and passages still showing the raw compositional process (e.g., “what the upstate Holy Rollers were calling called the People’s Police”). A better job of editing would have caught these various solecisms, as well as the embarrassing fact that some anecdotes — e.g., that Huey Long built “a half-assed half-scale replica of the White House” as his governor’s mansion — are recounted twice, thus compromising their effectiveness. Every time I began to fall under the spell of Spinrad’s kooky grandiloquence, some glaring error like this would throw me out of the story. This is particularly unfortunate given that, as noted above, The People’s Police marks the author’s dogged attempt to break back into the US market after a decade of frustrations.

All in all, though, I think the novel should be well received, as it manifests most of the strengths of Spinrad’s long career….

    The site’s About page says this:

    The Virginia Edition contains authoritative texts for all of Robert Heinlein’s published fiction and non-fiction, with text taken from the last volume in which Heinlein had a hand in the preparation, or those works restored to their intended state in publications directly overseen by Virginia Heinlein after her husband’s passing.

    What might “directly overseen” mean? I take it to mean somebody else did the work and it passed under Virginia Heinlein’s eyes for authorization. But that’s an ambiguous phrase that could actually mean a lot of things.

    It’s interesting that Tor, which has been so wonderful the last couple of years about crediting editors on copyright pages and Tor.com promos, did neither for this book. Given the author’s very vocal complaints about the cover, I suspect that there’s an unpleasant story behind that.

(4) so the beer is a Belgian IPA ie a style of beer developed by Belgians for export to the US to pander to the American IPA ale hegemony – IPA being a style of beer (aka Indian Pale Ale ) developed in Britain originally for export to India during the days of empire. The specific beer in question uses Australian hops. It is an American(Australian(Belgian(American(British(Indian(British)))))) beer. Now I need a drink! 🙂

  12. Too bad about the editing on the new Spinrad. I was looking forward to it. Will almost certainly read it anyway, but those sorts of problems are definitely off-putting. Still, I generally love his stuff. He may be an unreconstructed old hippie, and one who goes around trying to find ways to be controversial but…actually, there’s no “but” about it–that’s why I like him!

    Well, that, and he writes really interesting, multi-dimensional characters. I recently re-read his only non-SF work, Pictures at 11, and it still holds up very well twenty years later. If anything, it’s just as topical now as it was then–possibly more so, what with recent changes in US politics.

    (The same might be said about The Iron Dream, but I’m not going to go there…) 😀

  14. 9) I’m going to disagree with her evaluation of A Closed and Common Orbit. This book blew my socks off, and barring a miracle will be my #1 novel pick. An AI trying to learn how to be human (with a huge risk if she fails), two people helping her find her way who are warm-hearted, pragmatic, and totally accepting*, continual fascinating glimpses of genuinely alien cultures, a risky and desperate rescue mission, and a completely plausible and well-earned warm-fuzzy ending… what’s not to like? Chambers is outstanding at making the stakes feel high even if you already know how something comes out; Pepper’s back-story chapters were one of the things that kept the pages turning for me even though I knew that she’d gotten out, because I wanted to find out how she did it!

    Having read the two books in inverse order, I can also say that even though there is a large spoiler in ACaCO for the first book, it didn’t make that scene any less heart-wrenching to read. Oy.

    To sum up, I would say that the first book is classic space opera, with most of the focus being on the external journey and its effects (physical and psychological) on the characters. The second book has a much tighter focus, and tells a story of internal discovery — characterization, rather than action/adventure, is its driving engine.

    * This is not to say that they never disagree, but their style of disagreement and argument is, in the long run, healthy — a good model for how to handle this sort of thing in the real world.

    As for Virginia herself, the statement about her involvement simply means that she approved publication of the longer (not necessarily better) original manuscript versions of several novels that appeared in the early 1990s – including The Puppet Masters and Stranger in a Strange Land – and that those were the versions chosen for inclusion here.

    I suspect that the Virginia Edition Publishing Co. (i.e., the Heinlein Prize Trust) is very far from selling the 2000 sets that supposedly have been printed; on page 20 of the aforementioned discussion is apparent evidence that as of June 2012, only 285 sets had been sold.

  17. ‘re: The Virginia Edition. I read both versions of “Stranger” and “Puppet Masters”. I liked them both. The decisions seemed to be material that might be considered too racy in the original year of publication.
    YMMV as always.
    WRT only having sold ~275 of them, that’s a lot of money for most people. I’d be leery of getting eyeball tracks on such spiffy stuff, even though the money wouldn’t be a big deal for me. As I said, my heirs wouldn’t know what to do with them and certainly wouldn’t appreciate them.

  18. Re The longer Heinlein editions. I read the uncut edition of Stranger first, because when I decided to do a deep dive into Heinlein, it had just come out. I have not subsequently read the original version, so I am fuzzy on just how different it really is.

    Re: Spinrad. As noted above, too bad about the editing. I did have a phase where I eagerly consumed every bit of Spinrad I could lay my hands upon. I recently re-read The Star-Spangled Future though, and while it wasn’t a case of the suck fairy, my enthusiasm for some of the stories was much less than what it once was.

  19. I have not subsequently read the original version, so I am fuzzy on just how different it really is.

    I have read both versions (the originally-published version first, and long before the second). In my opinion, there is exactly one scene which is improved upon in the expanded edition; the content was clearly considered too shocking and was edited in a censorious way, which makes the action of one character make much less sense. He was supposed to be shocked beyond belief, and given how unshocking what happens in the shorter version is, he just comes off as a prude.

    The rest of the book is vastly diminished by the expansion, which throws back in a ton of dross and bilge which was cut for sound editorial reasons the first time around. The bathwater got thrown back in along with the baby. On the whole, I consider the shorter version by far the better work.

  20. The Puppet Masters became a much better novel as an anti-Communist allegory than as a blatant anti-Communist allegory. And while I approve of writers, Heinlein included, who try something new, writing a callous tough guy as a protagonist, even one who changes for the better, wasn’t in his skill set at the time he wrote it.

    As for Stranger in a Strange Land, which I have read countless times in the original cut version and several times in the uncut version, the uncut version is better line by line and the cut version is a better book. I would’ve restored two of the original passages, one cut for (self-)censorship and one cut for space and left it at that.

    (There’s an alternate universe where Heinlein handed exactly that manuscript in, cut for space but not propriety. In that universe, the book was barely published, never recovered, and Heinlein had to keep scrambling longer. He kept listening by necessity to editors and I Will Fear No Evil was his greatest work.)

    I’d love to know how much of the change in Heinlein over the years was Robert Heinlein and how much of it was Virginia Heinlein. I suspect that their winnowing of his papers over the years and her determined efforts to prevent a biography written about him (or them) in her lifetime makes that question unanswerable.

Kyra: Although I agree about “dross and bilge which was cut for sound editorial reasons the first time around,” stating it this way obscures the fact that it was Heinlein himself who made the cuts, very skillfully in my opinion, on a sentence-by-sentence basis. Indeed, this is the same sort of careful trimming that he’d previously done routinely. When the Heinlein online archives (including PDFs of all the original manuscripts) opened in 2007, I ordered the manuscript of Citizen of the Galaxy, the book of his that I return to most often; the many typed and handwritten changes constitute exactly the same kind of sentence-by-sentence tightening that can be seen when comparing the two published versions of Stranger.

    Keep an eye on Kindle monthly and seasonal sales. They’ve all been in at 99p over the last couple of years at some point, and the same books do keep repeating.

  25. @lurkertype: I didn’t think it was that bad, and certainly not dull; I suppose trite depends on how cynical you are already (cf your comment about Virginia Editions?).

A disconnected set of anecdotes that look less like a novel than the worst fix-up I’ve ever read?     @Arkansawyer: You multiply reread both versions of SiaSL? “Me hat’s off to the Duke!”. The closest I’ve come to reading more than a couple of pages of RAH in the last 25+ years is Robinson’s ?completion?, Variable Star; the annoyances I didn’t see when I was minor just get more and more grating. I’m a bit surprised you think IWFNE would have been his greatest book; someone I was talking books with when it came out said ~”RAH could retell ‘Jack and Jill’ and make a good story out of it — and would have done better than this.” I think it’s too much of a mess to have outweighed The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, but I suppose it depends partly on what strikes each reader as more adventurous/groundbreaking/…; it came out so close to the beginning of attention for 2nd-wave feminism that the bizarre assumption of a male brain in a female body becoming massively ?femme? (even with a disembodied coach) might not have cost it too much.

  30. Finished City of Miracles a couple of days ago. My opinion on it is pretty much the same as City of Blades–it was pretty good, but much of the charm of the trilogy was in the world building, and that was mostly completed in the first book, so it isn’t as much of a sock blowing (or abalone eating) experience.

    (5) ANONYMOUS LONGLIST: The next step is to include only the vowels from the story title. This year’s top contender is aieoiiea.
