The finalists for the 45th Annie Awards have been announced The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood.
At the awards ceremony to be held February 3 at UCLA’s Royce Hall, the following special awards also will be presented:
Winsor McCay Awards for career contributions will be presented to British character animator James BaxterSpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg and Canadian animation duo Wendy Tilby & Amanda Forbis.
The Ub Iwerks Award for technical advancement will recognize TVPaint.
A Special Achievement Award will be presented to Studio MDHR Entertainment for its 1930s-inspired video game Cuphead.
The June Foray Award for charitable impact will be awarded to animation historian Didier Ghez.
A Certificate of Merit will be presented to David Nimitz, friend and caretaker of veteran voice actress June Foray, who died in July at the age of 99.

The award was given in 36 categories. Juried Awards honoring career achievement and exceptional contributions to animation also were presented.
Three Winsor McCay recipients selected by the ASIFA-Hollywood Board of Directors: Joe Ranft, Phil Roman and Isao Takahata for their career contributions to the art of animation. (The Ranft award was made posthumously.)
The June Foray recipient was Don Hahn, for his significant and benevolent or charitable impact on the art and industry of animation. For the first time, Foray, 98, who came up with the idea for the Annie Awards in 1972, didn’t attend the ceremony, but gave her congratulations via video.

The award, created in 1982 by voice actor June Foray, recognizes the year’s best in the field of animation in multiple categories, such as storyboarding, character design, visual effects, editing and directing. Altogether there are 36 categories, including a first-timer —
“This year we introduced an important new category – Best Feature-Independent,” says ASIFA-Hollywood President, Jerry Beck. “We will now recognize not only features in wide release, but also the independent animators, international studios, anime and special productions that might not otherwise get the attention they deserve.”
Annie Award winners will be announced February 6.
