  1. Going forward, I believe I am going to use this as my definition of a cult film for voting purposes:

Cult film: a movie which did not have great box office success or subsequent mainstream popularity, but which nonetheless develops an unusually large and devoted following of admirers.

I will note that by this definition it is possible for a cult film to stop being a cult film if at some point it achieves mainstream popularity.

    14. GUNS AND FROWNING
    Rebel Without a Cause> (1956)
    Die Hard (1988)

I really have to question whether either of these are actually cult movies.

    18. BOTH ARE BRAINDEAD
    Braindead (1992)
    Flash Gordon (1980)

Sam J. Jones is one of the greatest actors to play Flash Gordon in a movie made in 1980.

    19. COME GET SOME!
    Drunken Master (1978)
    Army of Darkness (1992)

    Shock Treatment (1981)

    26. SHENNANIGANS WITH DEAD PEOPLE
    Soylent Green (1973)
    Clerks (1995)

I hate having to vote out Clerks this early in the brackets.

    27. WE’RE DOING THIS FOR PEACE
    The Rutles (1978)
    The Fifth Element (1997)

    28. MOVING AROUND, PICKING UP PEOPLE

    Rock & Rule (1983)

    32. WOULD HAVE PREFERRED A DOUBLE FEATURE
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
    Brazil (1985)

I hate the fates that pitted these two against one another this soon.

  10. 2. Young Frankenstein. Maybe a little (a lot) too popular to be “cult”, but no way I’m voting against it.

    3. Heathers.

    4. The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

    6. Memento. More of a cultish following, and great in its own way. Gets my vote, even tho’ I enjoyed Kiki’s more.

    7. Ladyhawke

    8. Serenity.

    10. Mystery Men. I’ve been skipping choices where I’ve seen neither or only one, but I’ll make an exception here. I’ve only seen Mystery Men, but from everything I’ve read or heard about Troll 2, it’s not cult, it’s just a bad movie.

    14. Rebel Without A Cause. No contest. I don’t think Die Hard can be considered “cult” when it earned a zillion dollars and spawned a franchise of (too many) sequels of declining quality.

    15. Blue Velvet.

    16. Being John Malkovich. Terminator, really? See above comment re Die Hard.

    19. Drunken Master. This was a hard choice.

    22. Big Trouble in Little China

    24. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

    26. Abstain. Didn’t like either.

    28. Time Bandits. Another hard choice. Time Bandits is great, but Wizard of Speed and Time has so much -heart- I hate voting against it.

    32. Rocky Horror Picture Show. Wins on “re-watchability”.

  11. 1. I ATE, BUT I DIDN’T INHALE
    Reefer Madness (1936)

    2. BEING ALIVE
    Young Frankenstein (1974)

    4. HIGHER HIGHER, BURNING FIRE, MAKING MUSIC LIKE A CHOIR
    Legend (1985)

    5. BURNING WEEDS
Fritz The Cat (1972). No contest.

    12. ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS LEADING TO TROUBLE
Excalibur (1981). Not least because it manages to get so much of the Arthurian mythos in.

    14. GUNS AND FROWNING
Rebel Without a Cause (1956). Not to be confused with the Theodore Beale biopic, Rebel Without a Clue.

    15. IT’S A STRANGE WORLD
    Wizards (1977)

    16. WORKING FOR THE FUTURE
    Being John Malkovich (1999)

    18. BOTH ARE BRAINDEAD

    26. SHENNANIGANS WITH DEAD PEOPLE
    Clerks (1995)

    27. WE’RE DOING THIS FOR PEACE

Well, when you are essentially a imperical malengistes of a rhythmically radical yet verbally passé and temporally transcended lyrically content welded with historically innovative melodical material transposed and transmogrified by the angst of the Rutland ethic experience which elevated them from essentially alpha exponents of in essence merely beta potential harmonic material into the prime cultural exponents of Aeolian cadencic comic stanza form, then it is easy to get lost somewhere on the way.

    WINNER: The Fifth Element

    32. WOULD HAVE PREFERRED A DOUBLE FEATURE
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) – 28 votes
    Brazil (1985) – 17 votes

How could this be? Never have I had so many reactions to a pairing in any of the brackets before. The conclusion must be that it was the “Love Conquers All”-version that was nominated.

WINNER: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

  14. > “The Room (2003) – 0 votes”

(Was that meant to be 10 votes? Because looking back, The Room got more than zero.)

  15. “> “The Room (2003) – 0 votes”

(Was that meant to be 10 votes? Because looking back, The Room got more than zero.)”

    Should have been 9 votes.

  16. <blink> That’s twice in two pairings when, in every single one of my abstain-because-I’ve-seen-just-one categories, the movie I’ve seen won over the one I haven’t. That’s got to be over 40 movies where that happened. I’m honestly flabbergasted.

But it means I’ll be able to vote in a lot more categories in the next round. The only movies left that I haven’t seen were in the few double-not-viewed pairings.

  17. @Hampus Eckerman
Great commentary. I laughed even though I’m missing the in-jokes.

    @Jim Henley
    LOL

    ——-
I’ll be voting in less pair offs in the future as a few of the movies I’ve seen were knocked out.
