Cult Movie Bracket, Third Round

  3. Low commentary due to intense (albeit pleasant) parental visit this week.

    1. HIDING UNDERNEATH
    Tremors (1990)
    Labyrinth (1986)

    2. FEATURING GEORGE HARRISON
    Army of Darkness (1992)
    Die Hard (1988)

    3. BRITISH HUMOUR
    Yellow Submarine (1968)
Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979)

I should have stocked up on forehead cloths. I knew things were just going to get more painful. Abstain. Although I do recommend Holy Flying Circus, a reenactment of the events leading up to the release of Monty Python’s Life of Brian (and a bit beyond).

    4. BIG VS LITTLE
    The Big Lebowski (1998)
The Little Shop of Horrors (1960)

    5. LEADER BY BOMB OR POND
    The Mouse That Roared (1959)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

    6. THE HAPPIEST DAYS OF OUR LIVES
    Pink Floyd: The Wall (1982)
    Groundhog Day (1993)

    Abstain.

    7. ALIENS GOING HOME
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
    Repo Man (1984)

    Ouch.

    8. BUCK UP LITTLE CAMPER
    Better Off Dead (1985)
    Kung Fu Hustle (2004)

    9. WHO BUILT THIS STINKING ROAD?
    Return to Oz (1985)
    Death Race 2000 (1975)

    10. DISTINCT TYPES OF VISIONAIRIES
    This is Spinal Tap (1984)
    Forbidden Planet (1956)

    11. CREATURE MOVIES
    Young Frankenstein (1974)
    Godzilla (1954)

    12. ON A MISSION
    The Blues Brothers (1980)
    Escape from New York (1981)

This is the cross-over that I most want to see this round.

    13. TAKEN ON A STRANGE JOURNEY
Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959)
Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

    Shaun of the Dead (2004)

    Abstain

    17. WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN TO NAME THIS TITLE!?
    Blazing Saddles (1974)
    Barbarella (1968)
    Serenity (2005)

Jane Fonda, on the Serenity, with a laurel and hearty handshake…. This is why I never win at Clue.

    Ranked, let’s call it

    1. Barbarella
    2. Blazing Saddles
    3. Serenity

  4. 1. Labyrinth
    2. Army of Darkness
    3. Yellow Sub
    4. Lebowski
    5. Holy Grail
    6. Oooohh… forehead cloth in pink… Floyd
    7. Rocky Horror
    8. Better Off Dead
    9. Death Race 2000
    10. Spinal Tap
    11. Young Frankenstein
    12. Blues Bros.
    13. Plan 9
    14. Time Bandits
    15. Priscilla
    16. Princess Bride
    17. Serenity, Barbarella, No Award

    Further rounds will be painful.

  5. 1. HIDING UNDERNEATH
    Tremors (1990)
    Labyrinth (1986)

Not hiding very well, either of them.

    2. FEATURING GEORGE HARRISON
    Army of Darkness (1992)
    Die Hard (1988)

I have shared my opinion re: Die Hard already.

Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979)

    4. BIG VS LITTLE
    The Big Lebowski (1998)
The Little Shop of Horrors (1960)

It really ties the bracket together.

    5. LEADER BY BOMB OR POND
    The Mouse That Roared (1959)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

    6. THE HAPPIEST DAYS OF OUR LIVES
    Pink Floyd: The Wall (1982)
    Groundhog Day (1993)

I just can’t vote for The Wall in any form, not with Trump as an official nominee.

    7. ALIENS GOING HOME
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
    Repo Man (1984)

    8. BUCK UP LITTLE CAMPER
    Better Off Dead (1985)
    Kung Fu Hustle (2004)

Yes, there was a manic pixie dream girl. But I will forgive that for Mom’s home cooking. You like raisins.

    9. WHO BUILT THIS STINKING ROAD?
    Return to Oz (1985)
    Death Race 2000 (1975)

Have I mentioned the room of heads?

    This is Spinal Tap (1984)
    Forbidden Planet (1956)

    11. CREATURE MOVIES
    Young Frankenstein (1974)
    Godzilla (1954)

    12. ON A MISSION
    The Blues Brothers (1980)
    Escape from New York (1981)

    13. TAKEN ON A STRANGE JOURNEY
Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959)
Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

    14. USED AS PUPPETS
    Time Bandits (1981)
    Being John Malkovich (1999)

    15. BATTLE OF THE DRAG QUEENS
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)
    Pink Flamingos (1972)

Not the one I’d rather watch. The better cult movie.

    16. A MATCH FOR YOUR BRAIN
    The Princess Bride (1987)
    Shaun of the Dead (2004)

    17. WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN TO NAME THIS TITLE!?
    2) Blazing Saddles (1974)
    1) Barbarella (1968)
    3) Serenity (2005)

  6. 1. Labyrinth
    2. Army of Darkness
    3. Life of Brian
    4. Little Shop of Horrors
    5. Holy Grail
    6. The Wall
    7. RHPS
    8. Better Off Dead
    9. Ooooh. Return to Oz, but a tough call.
    10. Spinal Tap, despite the lack of Anne Francis.
    11. Young Frankenstein
    12. Blues Brothers, if for no other reasons than the demise of the Bluesmobile and Jake’s epic excuse.
    13. Dr. Strangelove
    14. Time Bandits
    15. Pink Flamingos, with reluctance.
    16. Princess Bride
    17. Another tough one, which I would have called “Spaced Cowboys.” Um. Saddles, Serenity, Barbarella.

  7. RESULTS:

    1. HIDING UNDERNEATH
    Tremors (1990) – votes: 11
    Labyrinth (1986) – votes: 33

Run for it? Running’s not a plan! Running’s what you do, once a plan fails!

    Also, the running failed.

    WINNER: Labyrinth

    2. NOT FEATURING GEORGE HARRISON
    Army of Darkness (1992) – votes: 26
    Die Hard (1988) – votes: 16

Hans Gruber: This time John Wayne does not walk off into the sunset with Grace Kelly.
John McClane: That was Gary Cooper, asshole.
Hans Gruber: And Gary Cooper died in 1961.

    WINNER: Army of Darkness

    3. BRITISH HUMOUR (FEATURING GEORGE HARRISON)
    Yellow Submarine (1968) – votes: 12
    Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979) – votes: 33

    He’s a real nowhere man
    Sitting in his nowhere land
Making all his nowhere plans for nobody

WINNER: Monty Python’s Life of Brian

    4. BIG VS LITTLE
    The Big Lebowski (1998) – votes: 20
The Little Shop of Horrors (1960) – votes: 20

Nihilism might not be an ethos, but it is the winner in this pair.

    WINNER: TIE!

    5. LEADER BY BOMB OR POND
The Mouse That Roared (1959) – votes: 12
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) – votes: 32

King Arthurs manages to trick the mouse out from the bomb with a large coconuts as a lure. He ties the mouse to a swallow to send it away to Africa. Or Europe.

WINNER: Monty Python and the Holy Grail

    6. THE HAPPIEST DAYS OF OUR LIVES
Pink Floyd: The Wall (1982) – votes: 11
    Groundhog Day (1993) – votes: 30

The evidence before the court is incontrovertible, there’s no need for the jury to retire!

    WINNER: Groundhog Day

    7. ALIENS GOING HOME
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) – votes: 34
    Repo Man (1984) – votes: 9

Tip: Do not open the trunk of a Chevy Malibu if the car is glowing green. Repo Man is turned to ashes and Rocky Horror goes on to next round.

WINNER: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

    8. BUCK UP LITTLE CAMPER
    Better Off Dead (1985) – votes: 17
    Kung Fu Hustle (2004) – votes: 7

The Buddhist Palm method didn’t work then and it doesn’t work now. Sing fails to join the Deadly Axe Gang, fails to kill the landlady, fails to protect the mute girl. And doesn’t get two dollars.

    WINNER: Better Off Dead

    9. WHO BUILT THIS STINKING ROAD?
    Return to Oz (1985) – votes: 15
    Death Race 2000 (1975) – votes: 11

Frankenstein is killed by his own holy hand grenade and the car crashes into a yellow brick wall.

    WINNER: Return to Oz

    10. DISTINCT TYPES OF VISIONAIRIES
This is Spinal Tap (1984) – votes: 27
    Forbidden Planet (1956) – votes: 16

This pairing was number ten, but Spinal Tap goes up to eleven.

    WINNER: This is Spinal Tap

    11. CREATURE MOVIES
    Young Frankenstein (1974) – votes: 29
    Godzilla (1954) – votes: 14

Godzilla is defeated by the oxygen destroyer. But if the doomsday weapon of pairing 13 is used again and the world is ravished by nuclear weapons, another Godzilla might rise up from the oceans.

    WINNER: Young Frankenstein

    12. ON A MISSION
    The Blues Brothers (1980) – votes: 24
Escape from New York (1981) – votes: 19

One is on a mission to save the world. The others on a mission for God. One failed, the others succeeded.

    WINNER: The Blues Brothers

    13. TAKEN ON A STRANGE JOURNEY
    Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959) – votes: 10
Dr. Strangelove or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) – votes: 34

It turns out that Plan 9 from Outer Space was destroyed before this bracket, but that the directors chiropractor tried to perform his own reenactment of the movie. It didn’t work out well.

    WINNER: Dr. Strangelove

    14. USED AS PUPPETS
    Time Bandits (1981) – votes: 32
    Being John Malkovich (1999) – votes: 9

Malkovich. Malkovich, malkovich, MALKOVICH! Malkovich!? Malkovich.

    WINNER: Time Bandits

    15. BATTLE OF THE DRAG QUEENS
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) – votes: 25
    Pink Flamingos (1972) – votes: 5

    ABBA beats rockabilly.

WINNER: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert

    16. A MATCH FOR YOUR BRAIN
    The Princess Bride (1987) – votes: 37
Shaun of the Dead (2004) – votes: 4

As Bertrand Russell once said, “The only thing that will redeem mankind is cooperation.” I think we can all appreciate the relevance of that now.

Of course, being redeemed is no help if you are being eaten by zombies.

    WINNER: The Princess Bride

    17. WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN TO NAME THIS TITLE!?
    Blazing Saddles (1974) – votes: first 27, second 9, third 3
    Barbarella (1968) – votes: first 7, second 12, third 16
    Serenity (2005) – votes: first 12, second 12, third 7

Real western beats space western. Blazing Saddles goes on in a blaze of glory. Barbarella and the crew of Serenity goes on a mad hunt for an 80:s synth band and were last seen singing “The Wild Boys” in a Karaoke Bar.

    WINNER: Blazing Saddles

Given that #4 was a tie, I presume you’re going to keep Serenity in as well, so that you have 9 pairs for the next round?

  9. Given that #4 was a tie, I presume you’re going to keep Serenity in as well, so that you have 9 pairs for the next round?

    Nope. Serenity is out.

    Consider this an official protest.

You can’t take the sky from me.

  11. Well, I’m relieved. I ran out of time to vote, but almost all the things I would have voted for won, and the ones that didn’t lost decisively, so my vote wouldn’t have mattered much. And I wouldn’t have voted in the tied pair. Now to get the next batch of forehead cloths ready for shipping…..

  12. But, but, but Serenity *cries*

In other news a number of the movies I’ve seen were eliminated. A higher number of movies I’d heard of prior to the bracket were eliminated. I’m feeling less geeky by the bracket.

Great commentary as always Hampus. Thanks for taking on this contentious bracket.
