2025 Oscar Nominations

When the 2025 Oscar Nominations were announced today sff was well represented among the nominees.

Three of the Best Picture nominees are of genre interest, Dune: Part Two, The Substance and Wicked.

 Emilia Pérez, the musical about a Mexican cartel leader who fakes his death and undergoes a gender transition but cannot avoid the people in her former life, leads all nominees with 13 including Best Picture, the most by a non-English-language film in Oscar history.

Wicked received 10 nominations, including for its stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Dune: Part Two got five, as did horror tale The Substance. Nosferatu is up for four Oscars, The Wild Robot for three, and Flow for two. Alien: Romulus and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes each have one, in the Visual Effects category.

  1. Inside Out 2 is also of likely SF/F interest, it being about little people inside a girl’s head who manage her personality.

    And from the Department of Pedantry, while these are all Oscar ‘nominations’ (all works and people put forward for an Oscar are ‘nominated’) they are more importantly ‘short-listed’ for Oscars: ‘nomination’ is not synonymous with ‘short-listing’. 😉 (This is a common mistake and, for example, it is one Wikipedia keeps making and the Oscar people themselves don’t seem to appreciate the difference which makes their own web page confusing – nominations are made to decide who are nominations????) Until several years ago I too was making this mistake.
