1. Congrats to the winners!

   How do I not own Vess’s book yet?! ::sending gift idea to spouse::

2. Sometime this Autumn, a deluxe edition of his Ballads & Sagas will coming from Dark Horse. And if don’t you own it now, Drawing Down the Moon: The Art of Charles Vess is well worth getting as well. I’ll smugly note that my copy of the Charles de Lint novel Seven Wild Sisters is personally signed by Vess who illustrated it and the author.

3. Since the awards are just two blocks from our house, I’ve been attending this one, and it’s been a lot of fun. On the short fiction side, I was pleased to see I recommended all the winners. 🙂

   For the rest, I’ve still got my doubts about “Death’s End,” but otherwise, I thought this was a really strong set of winners.

   If any filers are going to be at the party at 8:00, do say hello.

4. @Cat Eldridge: Was Charles Vess drawing permanent or temporary tattoos on de Lint?

5. Good point. I never should do three things at once of which one is paying attention to my three SJW creds who wanted to be fed right then. All of which are hiding now as the ballpark here just set off fireworks which they fear most strongly.

   Now a Vess tat sounds like it could be way cool. Mind you my PCP would have strong words if I even considered doing so.

6. Having just read about half of Kushiel’s Dart, I’m now wondering what the marque of an SFF writer would look like.

7. @Cat Eldridge: I heard about the deluxe Ballads & Sagas, though since I own a previous version, I’m not sorely tempted. Drawing Down the Moon is great – I do have that. Vess is one of my fave artists! I gushed/squee’d at him at a con once, I blush to admit. 😉

   Yeah – that surprised me as well.

9. Well, if you take out 2 of the other contenders, both of which have very enthusiastic followings, of course you can force “Death’s End” to win. I daresay it’s not going to top the Hugo list.

10. I did finally finish reading “Death’s End” at least. It does have some really cool ideas, but (for me) that doesn’t make up for the deficiencies in character and plot.

    Setting aside Ballads & Sagas, my favourite works he illustrated are both by de Lint, one being Moonheart, the other being The Cats of Tanglewood Forest. And somewhere here there exists a bunch of prints he sent along on a winter long ago…

14. Count me among those who would vigorously disagree with the above criticisms of Death’s End. I loved the book (and the series), the writing, the translation, the science, the creativity, pretty much everything about it.

    The science is compelling, the epic sprawls across thousands of years, Liu’s imagination and creativity, IMO, is unmatched in the genre.

    Congratulations to all of the winners. I also loved All the Birds In the Sky and Every Heart a Doorway. Ninefox Gambit didn’t quite work for me personally, but I was nonetheless quite impressed with it.
