Margaret Owen Wins 2023 Endeavour Award

The Endeavour Award for books published in 2023 by Pacific Northwest Authors was presented on Friday, October 18 at OryCon 44 in Portland, Oregon.

 The 2023 Endeavour Award winner is Margaret Owen, for Painted Devils (Henry Holt).

The winning entry was selected by judges Neil Clarke, Sara Mueller, and John Murphy,

The judges offered praise for the winner: “The intricacy of the plot, how the supernatural interacts with the mortal world of the book, and the handling of the characters won us over.”

The other award finalists included:

  • Again and Again by Jonathan Evison (Penguin Random House/Dutton)
  • Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree (Tor)
  • Sleep No More by Seanan McGuire (DAW)
  • Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Cañas (Berkley)

The award encourages the growth of literature in the field and recognize works of excellence. It is named for H.M. Bark Endeavour, the ship of Northwest explorer Capt. James Cook and is accompanied by a grant of $1,000.

Submissions will soon open for the Endeavour Award for books published in 2024. To enter, contact Jim Kling at EndeavourAward at gmail dot com for submission instructions. They welcome all science fiction or fantasy works of 40,000 words or more, or single-author collections of short fiction. The author(s) must have legal or physical residence in the Pacific Northwest [Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, The Yukon, and British Columbia] when the publisher accepted the book and must affirm that they wrote the majority of the book while living in the Pacific Northwest. Submissions must be in an electronic format. There is no fee for entry.
