Theodore A. Sturgeon Memorial Award 2025 Finalists

The 2025 finalists for the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award for the best short science fiction story have been selected.

The Sturgeon Award was established in 1987 by James Gunn, Founding Director of the Gunn Center for the Study of Science Fiction at the University of Kansas, and the heirs of Theodore Sturgeon. The winner will be announced later this summer and will be presented with their award and a cash prize as a guest of honor at our annual Sturgeon Symposium this October.

  2. I just don’t understand the popularity of the new Omelas story, “Why Don’t We Just Kill the Kid in the Omelas Hole”. It seems like it’s just about killing children, and according to the original Omelas story, the only thing needed to break the sacrifice of the suffering child is a kind word.

    “The terms are strict and absolute; there my not even be a kind word spoken to the child” page 12.

    I figure I’m missing some parallel or allegory that’s being drawn?
