Was There Ever a Rougher July 4 Weekend?

Some of the sad news stories from the past few days have been more bearable because the sf community immediately rallied to help, but it was a hard weekend for fandom.

Diana, Sierra and I attended Westercon, and did not escape without some worries of our own. Diana developed severe back pains Saturday night, and we spent over eight hours in a Las Vegas emergency room while doctors tried to discover the cause. All they were really able to do was treat the pain. Around 5 a.m. Sunday we got back to the room, crashed for a few hours, then headed home.

  1. Turns out it was a kidney stone: very very very painful, but also (thank God) entirely temporary. All better now!
