Sasquan Official Attendance and Membership

Sasquan’s Glenn Glazer has announced the final attendance and membership figures.

Attendance: 5,171

Includes all paid admissions including one-days. (One-day admissions are usually not technically members of WSFS, but we do count them for the purpose of computing total attendance. A one-day admission counts as one attendee.) It excludes freebies who did not participate in the convention (e.g., contractors), unpaid children, paid attending members who did not attend, and all supporting members, but it does include free memberships given to people who did participate in the convention (e.g. guests of honor).

The con counted 5,230 warm bodies, then subtracted 49 kids-in-tow and 10 contractors in order to arrive at 5,171 reportable attendance.

Total members: 11,648

Total members includes everyone who paid for a membership or admission whether full attending, one-day, child, or supporting, plus the Guests of Honor and other free memberships given to people participating in the convention. It does not include freebies who did not participate in the convention.

  1. The con counted 5,230 warm bodies…

I see that Worldcon is still shamelessly prejudiced against the undead.

Blame me for adding the “warm” part. Poetic license inspired by all the fires in Washington state. Yeah, that’s it….

    And our reptiloid overlords

Announcing Despondent Undead 1: a campaign to get all zombies, vampyres, and other underworld denizens fairly counted at Worldcon.

Also, the campaign is to ensure that their special dietary needs will be catered for in the consuite.

See this is why cold-blooded and warm-blooded have fallen out of use as technical terms. Many reptiles are ectothermic, ie they rely on outside sources of heat, but they still ned their bodies to be warm in order to visit conventions.

I’m also given to understand that out reptiliod overlords do exhibit endothermy (which may point to genetic links with the dinosaurs, but that is pure speculation.

Camestros! Ixnay on the eptiloid-ray erlords-ovay! They’re secret for a reason!

Surely here at Phylum 770 we are amongst our own.

  6. Nor did it count us uploads.
Though I admit I should have sprung for a physical avatar at the con.

  7. But there is no proof that reptiloids lived at the same time as dinosaurs. Make sure your science is (politically) correct!

  8. I might as well get in on the discussion too: how do we know that the Undead are not warm-blooded?

  9. Now…if sasquan wasn’t renegging on its own transparency pledge, this zombie talk would be a lot less funny…

All right… I’ll bite. What ridiculous claim are you making about Sasquan now?

  11. What ridiculous claim are you making about Sasquan now?

I’m going to guess that the claim is that Sasquan agreed to release the raw Hugo data so that EPH could be tested, and it has been two whole weeks and they haven’t done so. Therefore, in Puppy land, that means they have “reneged” on their transparency pledge.

  12. Aaron: I’m going to guess that the claim is that Sasquan agreed to release the raw Hugo data so that EPH could be tested, and it has been two whole weeks and they haven’t done so.

Or it could be that Sasquan hasn’t revealed the “truth” about the “1,000 spoiled ballots”. Or it could be that Sasquan hasn’t refunded the membership fees of everyone who insists that “No Award” means that their vote was illegally discarded. Or it could be that Sasquan has not revealed how many hundreds of the Supporting memberships were actually purchased by George R.R. Martin.

I’m not au fait as to what has been dictated by the Puppy Overlords to be Today’s Wild-Ass Puppy Conspiracy Theory Talking Point.

  13. Mike’s poetically-licensed “warm” addition also fails to include me, and others like me, who found the convention center uncomfortably cold. In one small-ish programming room, the thermostat was right next to the door, and I adjusted the temperature up to 70F, but that was about the only time when I was comfortable in there.

  14. For me, it was the “Salon” rooms in the Doubletree that were the chilliest. I learned to bring a jacket with me to the programming items held in those rooms.
