Three SFF Works Are Finalists in The Great American Read

Harper Lee’s classic novel To Kill a Mockingbird won The Great American Read voting. The result was announced on the PBS series grand finale aired October 23.

SFF was strongly represented at the top of the poll, with the other top-five finishers (in order of votes) being Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series; J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels; Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice; and J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

However, To Kill a Mockingbird seized the lead from the very first week and held it for the entire five months of voting. It also topped the list of votes in every state except North Carolina (who went for Outlander) and Wyoming (who preferred Lord of The Rings).

The PBS program asked the public to vote its preference from a 100-book list chosen by a survey of 7,000 Americans. An advisory panel helped organize the list. Books had to have been published in English but not written in the language, and one book or series per author was allowed.
