I always wonder when ‘protagonists instagram account’ became the default cover art for modern fantasy, I suppose it appeals to a broader audience than the Babes & Barbarians/stick a dragon it styles of yore.
ETA: I only voted in the SF category, because geez when do they expect people to read all this stuff? I mean the year isn’t even out
I don’t think they do expect people to read all this stuff. I mean, you’re meant to read the things you vote for, but not necessarily anything else. The Hugos have some aspects of a juried award; there’s a feeling one should consider and compare the candidates. This isn’t like that; it’s to see which works have the most popular acclaim, so you just vote for the ones you have read, and like.
I think it’s an averaging of large numbers of people kind of thinking. Let’s say you read 10 or 20 books in a category this year. You vote for the one(s) you like best. Now, assuming the the rest of the voters read overlapping but not identical sets of 10-20 books the overall favorites should bubble to the top.
If you’re looking for Uprooted by Naomi Novik, check Young Adult Science Fiction & Fantasy. My favorite so far this year, and I would not consider it YA (even though it does have a 17 yr old protagonist).
Tried voting through my Goodreads app, but it’s really unclear. How many can I vote for in each category? How do II check what I’ve voted forso far? Why does it keep kicking me back to the notification page each time I vote?
Aargh.
snowcrash –
Don’t know how the app works but on the webpage, 1 per category. Will be checked off.
There was a time I would’ve known most of the horror field and now I know like 3 books. Going to have to check out Alice. Scarlet Gospels was bad, real bad.
