Ref. the Best Furry Friend Song Pegasus Award for Jen Midkiff’s “Underfoot”: my wife and I had a cat named “Underfoot” (so named by his former master). It had been our custom to name our cats after classical music or musicians (e.g., Ludwig, Wolfgang, [Fur] Elise, Aida, Sebastian, and the like), so I invented a late 18th century composer, Heinrich von Unterfuss or Unterfuß (whose music has thankfully not survived to the present day) to be Underfoot’s namesake. He was a fine and much-loved cat while he lived, but, alas, he’s gone to the Big Cathouse in the Sky.
