Best Editor Short Form Hugo: Eligible Works from 2019

By JJ: To assist Hugo nominators, listed below are the editors of short form works published for the first time in 2019.

These credits have been accumulated from Acknowledgments sections and copyright pages in works, eligibility posts, and other sources on the internet.

You can see the full combined spreadsheet of Editor and Artist credits here (I will be continuing to update this as I get more information).

Feel free to add missing 2019-original works and the name of their editors in the comments, and I will get them included in the main post. Self-published works may or may not be added to the list at my discretion.

PLEASE DON’T ADD GUESSES.

If you are able to confirm credits from Acknowledgments sections, copyright pages, or by contacting authors and/or editors, then go ahead and add them in comments. If you have questions or corrections, please add those also.

Authors, Editors, and Publishers are welcome to post in comments here, or to send their lists to jjfile770 [at] gmail [dot] com.

Some of the magazines listed below are Prozines and are not eligible in the Hugo Semiprozine category. For a list of Semiprozines vs. Prozines, see Semiprozine.org.

31 thoughts on “Best Editor Short Form Hugo: Eligible Works from 2019

  1. Because this is so delayed due to illness, I wanted to get it posted before the Hugo nomination deadline. I will be continuing to update it until then, and would appreciate links to eligibility posts from venues which are not yet included in this list. Thanks! 🙂

  2. Sean Wallace: What about everything from The Dark for Silvia Noreno-Garcia and myself?

Hi Sean, would you be able to send me a list of the works with their authors and story lengths, or point me to an eligibility post which lists them? Thanks. ( jjfile770 [at] gmail [dot] com )

  3. Laura: Vanessa Rose Phin became editor-in-chief in March.

Is that in place of Crowley and Dollarhyde, or in addition to them?

Thanks for the info, that’s really helpful. I really appreciate the effort you put into helping me make these eligibility posts the best they can possibly be, Laura. 🙂

  4. Hope you feel better soon, JJ! Thank you for all the work you put into this and the Editor Long Form post.

  5. An addition for yuou (and hope you feel better soon, JJ):

The Escape Artists Podcasts (Podcastle, Escapepod, Pseudopod, Cast of Wonders) led by Marguerite Kenner and Alasdair Stuart are a semiprozine, in audio and unless I misunderstand Hugo nomination rules, would qualify as Best Short Fiction editors for the fiction they put out.

  6. Thank you for this. Just a note that “Linger Longer” by Vincent J. Masterson (short fiction) in Echoes was a reprint.

  7. @Paul (and JJ): The correct way to list the Escape Artists magazines would be:

Mur Lafferty & S.B. Divya – the 18 original stories in 2019 Escape Pod

Khaalidah Muhammad-Ali, Jen R. Albert, and Cherae Clark – the 15 original stories in 2019 PodCastle

Pseudopod doesn’t want Hugo nominations and say so at the bottom of their list of original stories in 2019

I don’t see an eligibility page for Cast of Wonders but their editors this year were Katherine Inskip, Andrew K. Hoe, and Marguerite Kenner, and here are their 2019 originals

  8. Paul Weimer: The Escape Artists Podcasts are a semiprozine

Yes, and the reason that they’re not on the list yet is because their list of fiction podcasts is long and the editing credits are widely distributed in numerous different combinations. So do just Lafferty and Divya get credit for the Escape Pod stories, or does Ass’t Editor Kinney get credited as well? The Artemis Rising stories are listed as credits on Lafferty/Divya’s page, but according to another page on their site Artemis Rising was actually edited by Laura Pearlman and S. Kay Nash (and if that’s the case, it’s not very nice to give Pearlman and Nash’s credits to someone else). Kenner’s individual eligibility page takes credit for the Artemis Rising stories, too. I’m not giving 5 or 6 people credit for editing the same story. If they can sort their credits list out, I’ll add it.

  9. Thanks to Sean Wallace for forwarding the list of stories for The Dark. Those credits have been added.

  10. Ellen Datlow: Just a note that “Linger Longer” by Vincent J. Masterson (short fiction) in Echoes was a reprint.

Thanks, Ellen, I’ve made the correction.

  11. Thanks for your response, JJ. It’s an interesting perspective. We clearly need to do a better job of communicating our team structures, what else our roles involve, and the fact that selecting and shaping stories and themed episode sets is indeed the work of multiple people.

Marguerite and I are editors for Cast of Wonders, and have editoral input and oversight over the whole publication. But we believe in giving our staff opportunities for growth and development, and do this with our themed episode sets. Similarly, we will occasionally invite other voices in as guest editors.

So, for instance, Andrew K Hoe is going to be guest editing Dinovember 2020. If you like what he does with that, and it’s four or more episodes, it will count as a short fiction editor credit for him specifically within the wider umbrella of what we do because he’s the one who has set the submission theme, makes the final selections of stories (and narrators), signs off on edits, and takes responsibility for our production timeline. The same is true for Any Brennan and Karissa Sluss for Artemis Rising 2019 last year. Does the audience need to know who did the bulk of the word and paragraph editing of each story? I don’t think so. It’s an important part of what we do, but not by any means the largest part. If anyone thinks the AR5 episode set stands out as being worthy of nomination on their own, then give Amy and Karissa a nod for it. Should those episodes be excluded from the wider Cast of Wonders editorial eligibility posts? I don’t think so. Taking a back seat on those ones in an Org Chart sense doesn’t change the fact that we were a team, that Marguerite and Alexis and I were engaged in a training and supportive sense throughout every step of those episodes, sometimes hands on and sometimes hands off, depending on what was needed. No-one really needs to know exactly who did what or bean-count how many track changes edits each person contributed to any given story.

Yes, our role is about polishing words. But honestly, it’s even more about people. Listening to voices, creating a space, getting them heard. And I want people to know that about editing for a semiprozine like Cast of Wonders, and the other EA shows. Sure, people can nominate us and our authors/stories or not, for whatever categories they think we’re eligible for (or not). But we ARE a team. And if that counts against us, if those parts of what we do as editors aren’t part of the equation? If all that’s left is words on paper?

At that point, we’ve lost sight of the story

TL;DR. All CoW’s 2019 fic is within the MK/KI editorial umbrella. If you want to highlight AR5 episodes specifically then nominate AB/KS instead, or for the Banned Books Week episode set give the nod to guest editor Julia Rios

  12. Thanks for your response, Katherine.

What you’re asking me to do is to go digging for the correct information and try to figure out who should be credited for which stories.

In the last 18 months, I’ve spent well over 500 hours putting together posts like this (in addition to working a day job), for the lavish salary of Zero Dollars. I do it to benefit readers, not editors and authors. The amount that I can do depends on my available amount of time and energy. Having been so ill for 2.5 months has unfortunately cut into that. The bottom line is that people who make the job easy for me will get included. The people who make the job really hard for me probably will not.

  13. JJ: the first link that Katherine provided to the main Escape Artists site literally links to a list of all eligible original stories for each EA show collated by the editors, and includes graphics summarising eligibility for each show, all posted six weeks ago. Whilst I absolutely appreciate the pressures of real life, and that you’re doing this voluntarily and for the benefit of the community, I’m genuinely not sure how EA could make it easier. If you’ve got ideas, we’re listening, because it sure does sting when the hours of work put in through the year get overlooked.

  14. Matt, as I’ve previously explained in the comments on this thread, I know that these are incorrect because they do not credit the Artemis Rising editors for the AR stories.

The EA folks want to get credit in the Best Editor category for all of the stories they had a hand in producing. But the category is very specifically for STORY EDITOR, not “Publisher”, “Producer”, “Audio Footage Editor”, or “Person Who Made Some Contribution Toward Getting A Story Published/Podcasted”.

They don’t have to like that, but they can’t expect to be listed as editor of a story they didn’t actually EDIT.

I need the list of actual editing credits. If 5 or 6 people are being given credit for any given story, then they’re not all the actual editor of that story.

  15. Thanks to Eric James Stone for passing on the editing credits for Daily Science Fiction.

  16. @JJ: Thanks for all the additions and to the Editors who’re making this easier. I’m so sorry you’ve been sick so long and you’re amazing for doing all this in spite of that!

I’m especially happy to see an update for “Daily Science Fiction.” I was going to suggest them, then realized I wasn’t sure how to find the correct information, so kudos to Eric James Stone for sending the info you needed.

  17. Hi gang, I’m working on the 2020 Editors lists, and I’d appreciate it if you’d post links to any short form or long form editor credit lists you run across. 🙂

  18. C.C. Finlay: Index to 2020 F&SF

Ignore the first A section because those two novelettes are from 2019.

“My Name Was Tom” by Tim Powers is a reprint from his 2018 collection.

“Come the Revolution” by Ian Tregillis is listed as a novella, but the word count I get is novelette at 16,549 (still within the Hugos 20% allowance).

“Birds Without Wings” by Rebecca Zahabi is listed as a novelette, but I get just short of that at 7,399 words (again within 20%).

Total of 65 original stories as categorized there: 4 novellas, 23 novelettes, 38 short stories.

  19. Laura: Lynne M. Thomas and Michael Damian Thomas: Uncanny Magazine

It’s really disappointing to see that the Thomas’ haven’t withdrawn their Semiprozine from eligibility this year. Five years in a row is surely enough that they could be generous and step aside so that other quality magazines could get some recognition. 😐
